Hello,
Thanks for all the assistance you have given in relation to Whitehaven. If you have the time, here is one more for you.
My Aunt Violet Hallett Thomas was one of three children of Robert Hallett born about 1888 and Catherine Quinn born about 1891 both in Whitehaven. Catherine's parents were James and Ellen Quinn. Robert's parents were Walter Hallett born about 1864 maybe Gate Fulford in Yorkshire and Sarah Jane Hutton born about 1866 and they were married in Whitehaven in 1886. At time of this marriage Walter's father John was listed on their marriage certificate as deceased. He was said to have died in an accident aboard a ship in Hamburg Harbor. Looking for John and his wife and family, etc. I found one candidate John Hallett born 1818 in Dorset and wife Jane born about 1930 also Dorset but I have not been able to get Walter's birth certificate to verify his mother's name. I say candidate only because the 1861, 1871, and 1888 Dorset census lists this John as having a son Walter born in 1864 but in Dorset not Yorkshie?? Any info on these folks is welcome especially if we can verify the correct John.
Thanks

That's not fair, Geoff! Please give a hint...and, please may I ask what "Call my Bluff" means?

CALL MY BLUFF: Panel show. Two teams of three celebrities try to bluff each other over the meaning of bizarre words from the dictionary. One of UK TV's longest running quiz shows the original host was Robin Ray and then Robert Robinson. Original captains were Frank Muir and Robert Morley. After a spell off air the show currently airs weekday lunchtimes and is hosted by Bob Holness with captains being Sandi Toksvig and Alan Coren. The show was based on an American original that ran on NBC in 1965.

Hi

thought I had something here - I've found a Walter in Yorkshire born Circa 1864 ish, with parents Joseph (not a john) and Sarah:

1871 Census, Yorkshire, Myton, District 51

No 1 Summers St, Kingston upon Hull, Yorkshire
Joseph Hallett, Hd, 29, Joiner
Sarah Hallett, Wf, 37
Thomas Hallett, Sn, 10, Scholar
Walter Hallett, Sn, 7, Scholar
James, Sn, 6, Scholar
Ada, Daughter, 2

I've got this in 1861 as well, how frustrating!!!!

Many thanks Geoff! I've finally figured out your anagram and that it wasn't meant to spell 'ram spit'!   ;)

Andrew:

If you're interested in reading more Cumbrian dialect, please check the Whitehaven News next week.  My dear e-friend, Malcolm (from the April 2005 Rootschat Challenge) has written a letter to the paper about my family.  It includes a dialect story and poem written by my great-grandfather, Joseph Pattinson, in 1892.  (The one with the tattiepot mention.  :)) The editor has said that it might appear in the March 16th edition.

Happy day,
Donna

I will look out for it

Do you know what "oxters" are yet though?

It is a real West Cumbrian word (a part of the body) and the anagram is right

Maybe I should start a thread up  ;)  :D

Hoos a'bowt: the chaff, shooder, neaf, and cawf ?

Why on earth did they need secret codes during the war  ;) ;)
