I just hope I am not confusing things, that last photo is from Whitehaven, I know what an overload of information is like.

Hello Andrew.
Greetings from Australia. I have just stumbled across your entry and would really appreciate if you were able to help me in any small way. My known connection is to the REED, GRAHAM and HALLIFAX families of Whitehaven.

James Reed was born in 1805 and his wife Ann Graham in 1803, both in Whitehaven.  They were married at the Holy Trinity Church in 1833. Ann's parents were William Graham and Ann Hallifax. That Ann was born in Whitehaven leads me to assume her parents were from that town or lived in close proximity. I suspect all were buried in Whitehaven.

I know Ann and James had a son, Henry...without him where would I be? What I don't know, and can't seem to find out anywhere yet, is did he have siblings? Would there be any records you could access that might provide some information?

The above information is the little I know about his branch of my family in Whitehaven. Any clues or snippets of information that would help me learn more about them would be really appreciated.

Your offer of help in research is very generous and greatly appreciated.

So far I can confirm your information on John son of John and Elizabeth born 8 Jan 1805,

I have looked and came up with:

a William Mitchell (soldier) married Mary McMina April 8th 1799

a John Mitchell (soldier) married Hannah Cummins Nov 13th 1813

a Thomas Mitchell (surgeon) married Isobell Mossop Mar 17th 1822, who had a daughter Mary bapt Aug 3 1829

I don't know if these are yours as they are all Holy Trinity, not St James

Still looking for a John son of Thomas

Andrew

Hi Andrew ,

Thanks for the good work - Ive just re looked at my info and read it again and it says John father of Thomas. Not John father Thomas. Plus I have just found another document that says father JOHN.

So the one christened to John and Elizabeth born 8 Jan 1805, Is our John. Sorry for sending you on a wild goose chase.

I traced up their line and found there marriage.

A question would the parish record have info on there parents etc? Or was that not written.

Thanks ,
Holly

Parish records differ from year to year, some times it is just the names of the Groom & Bride, sometimes Groom & Bride and witnesses and occasionaly but not often and more later ones have parents

More often than not it says eg:
24 Aug 1789, Thomas Smith and Ann Swainson both of this parish,  the ministers name and sometimes - Witnessed by James Birbeck and Taylor Swainson and if the people were of age and if by licence

Quite often one of the parents turn up as witnesses as above

As a matter of interest:  Taylor Swainson above was one of the unsung inventors of the locomotive steam engine and is a direct ancestor as I found out a few days ago

So getting back to the question, sometimes but not often!

Is Jacob Reed one of yours?

He was born circa 1835 and was married to a Mary Ann Dobbins in 1857 @ St James, Whitehaven if he is one of yours then we have a connection by marriage.  Mary Ann was my ggg Aunt

Could be one of the siblings your seeking

I need to check this out

Good morning Andrew...and it is indeed a good morning now! The weather may be bleak, but the day is fine.

What a fantastic find...I wait now in anticipation of the extra details for the BDMs...when your time allows.

I really do appreciate what you are doing...thank you
