Not much to go on but its all I can find Roman Catholic records are few and far between

Sorry its took so long I have some information, how useful it is I don't know

I have found an Edward Whitfield, head (Clogger) of 105 Queen Street on the 1861 Census, 28 years old, born Whitehaven, married to Martha age 26, born Allonby, daughter Mary Martha age 1, born Whitehaven

The above is confirmed by a Whitehaven Trade Directory of 1861, pg 218

I have found a John Whitfield a widower aged 48 Clagger (should read Clogger) on the 1881 census of the Union Workhouse Whitehaven - this age could be wrong

I can't pick up any trace of John on any other census indexes.

I am unable to find John on a trade directory, or the 1851 census

I have found on Ancestory a John married a Jane in 1830 in Haltwhistle, but he was born 1777

I have one day left before starting work (Monday) do you have anything that could point me in the right direction - what I was thinking is the Workhouse Records if they have not been sent for scanning which I suspect they may

I'm trying to find an old street map of Whitehaven to see where 105 Queen Street was, as its not where it is now - believe me there is quite a coincidental reason I know that

Thanks Andrew, The Edward Whitfield is the son of the John that I am looking for. John was dead by the 1861 census. The John Whitfield in the workhouse in 1881 should actually read Edward Whitfield and is the above Edward. His wife and daughter both died shortly after the 1861 census and Edward ended up in the workhouse. Someone did find John on the 1841 census for me but he has disappeared, with all his family, in 1851 but re-appeared for his death in 1859. Apart from his 2nd marriage to Jane in 1846 I have no other useful info. I feel that I have been looking for him for ever so will just have to leave him for now to re-gain my sanity.
