Hi Andrew
I live abroad and have reached a brick wall re: research on my Hall family. I don't know whether you are still able to assist anyone with look-ups but I would be very grateful if you might be able to find any family details in excise records at the Whitehaven records office. I need any family and work details concerning my ggg grandfather John Hall (snr) born around 1785 who was an excise officer (possibly born Middleham, Yorks but not sure of birthplace) in Whitehaven between Jan 1847 and Mar 1851 (dates of possible son John Hall jnr's marriage and census). I am trying to prove that John Hall jnr, b 1815, a saddler born in Wheelock, Cheshire who married Mary Wilkinson in Parton on 6 Jan 1847 was his son. I think John Hall snr may have married twice firstly to someone possibly named Jane (in about 1813) who may have been John Hall jnr's mother, the second time to Ann. John and/or his wife Jane lived in Wheelock, Cheshire at the time of his son John Hall's birth (possibly involved in salt tax administration) and possibly lived elsewhere before moving to Whitehaven. I do not know the maiden names of the wives but Ann was from Hunmanby, Yorks. The second marriage, if he was the John Hall snr from Middleham would be 1848-9 approx. John and his second wife Ann lived at 33 Kingston Place, Preston Quarter in 1851, 57 Kingston Place in 1861 and 118 Foxhouses Rd, Preston Quarter in 1871. Their daughter Frances Mary Ann Hall married John Brown Williamson of the Williamson shipyard in Whitehaven which could be another line of research. If you can assist in any simple way I would be very grateful. Many thanks, Carol
