old soldier

Can anyone identify this uniform. It's not for me it's for a friend who found it among some papers while clearing the house.

Looks very much a member of the Volunteer Rifle Corps, founded in 1859, one of the fore-runners of the Territorial Force.  They were the responsibility of the county authorities.

They had a penchant for rather ornate uniforms, the badge may be identifiable by someone who has more expertise in that area than I.

Thank you for your help, I will pass it on to my friend who is trying to connect it to a relative of her late husband. The following is what she knows " I know that my husbands great grandfather, Richard Walkley Chaloner, received a medal, a volunteer Long service medal in 1896 and he was a sergeant? As I have the 3 stripes. Any information would be appreciated. Richard was in the 1st Volunteer Battalion P.W.O West Yorkshire Regiment. The photo was taken in Shields Road Newcastle Upon Tyne." Once again thank you for your help.

The Volunteer battalions of the West Yorkshires formed in 1881 were descendants of the Volunteer Rifle Corps of which there were a number under the blanket heading of York Volunteer Rifles Corps.  These were essentially local units so where he came from might identify the unit.
