Johnstons of Greenlaw

I Live in Greenlaw.     Fogo is not far, few miles so a possibility Andrew Johnston was born in Fogo.

Thank you, I had seen "that" Andrew and was going to think about it !! You`ve just reminded me.

I came through Greenlaw last year when we visited the Borders, I should have taken Fogo in as well.

Andrew Johnston son James left Greenlaw and settled in Galashiels, I say settled, but the family had several addresses. Andrew`s grandson also James moved about a lot but returned to Greenlaw and is on the 1871 census living at Mill Wynd, Greenlaw.

Andrew, James, and James are my gt grandfathers.

James Johnston, son of Andrew Johnston, a weaver and Sarah Mitchell was born 14th October 1798.

No marriage at Greenlaw for the parents, but I`ve found a marriage of an Andrew Johnston and Sara Mitchell at Canongate 8th March 1793.

Is this likely ?

"Yes" many a Johnston went to Edinburgh to marry then return home, this is due to the Johnstons roots in Edinburgh itself . . .

Not sure if the 2 younger children are related, but, it would seem strange to marry in 1793 and not have a child until 1798, it's worth a follow up just in case, and whether also there may have been a second marriage . . .

James Johnston b 1798 is my 3x gt grandfather, the one in the 1841 census. He`s the son of Andrew and Sarah.

James Johnston b 1796, a weaver on the 1841 census is the son of Robert Johnston and Isabel Black.

Ive just looked up my book  "An Old Berwickshire Town"  and your ancestor  James Johnstone is mentioned in it.   "  the last of the handloom weaving industry in Greenlaw was represented by James Johnston and Robert Hume.  The former died in 1855, the latter in 1860"

1855 is the best year for Certificates.  lots of information on it.

I think this James Johnston may be the cousin of "my" James Johnston; he died in 1866 at Galashiels.
