I am Zoe Northeast, granddaughter of Maximilian Double.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,
Zoe

The "local connection" played far less of a part in which unit a man served in than is often thought. After conscription particularly men went where the army needed them.

Afternoon Challo,

Don't discount the possibility of it being the Cheshire Regiment. Both used an 8-pointed star.

It's difficult to be 100% sure from the quality and angle of the picture, but if you can have a better look at the original there are ways and means to differentiate between the two regiments. On the East Surrey badge the ends of the scroll actually touch the underneath of the points of the star at 3 and 9 o'clock and the uppermost point of the star is obscured by a crown. The scroll ends on the Cheshire Regiment badge stick out to the side without touching the badge and there is no crown at all. Also the acorn that features in the Cheshire Regiment badge is quite prominent and I'd say there is similar shape on the picture you have posted.

And obviously the Cheshire Regiment would be a closer geographical match to your family roots.

Get your magnifying glass out and let us know the outcome!

Regards,

Steve

Hi Dagenham Steve.
The only picture I have is 20 times smaller than the one I posted so you can see my problem . Many thanks

Dagenham Steve's suggestion of The Cheshire Regiment looks more likely - and as he mentions, the absence of a crown on their badge seems to clinch it. A local connection with them also seems more plausible.
(1) Janions of Cheshire, Lancashire, Hawaii, Vancouver and Seattle.
(2) Gregorys of Tarporley, Cheshire.
(3) Pughs of 'The New Pale' near Frodsham and Delamere in Cheshire.
(4) Nevills of Llanelly, Llangennech and Felinfoel.
(5) Yaldens of Ovington/Lovington in Hampshire.

Hi MaxD Dagenham Steve & SiGr

after a bit more research I think you 3 have solved the question I asked , my grandfather was in 4th [res]Batt Cheshire Regt in 1915 so I'm fairly sure this is him.

                                                             Many thanks challo
