Royal Households
« on: Friday 22 May 20 09:20 BST (UK) »
I am researching the life of William Taplin, actor, surgeon and veterinary surgeon (c.1740-1807). The only reference to his father I have found states that William was the ‘only son of one of the body corporate of Old Windsor'.  As Old Windsor was essentially Windsor Castle at that time, does 'the body corporate' indicate the Royal Household, or something relating to the town? If so, where might I look for a record of his father?

Old Windsor is a village 2.5 miles SE of New Windsor, or Windsor as we now call it.
Nothing to do with Windsor Castle, but Windsor Great Park is largely within Old Windsor.

The Beaumont Estate, at Old Windsor, was bought by ICL, and used by them as a training centre.
I attended many courses there!

Thomas Taplin's will (proved 1767) does mention "my son William Taplin". So does Martha Taplin's will (1782).

I wonder if the "body corporate" is some particular parish organisation or of the manor of Old Windsor.

Old Windsor was the site of the Anglo-Saxon royal residence.  Windsor Castle replaced this residence and has always been in the parish of New Windsor.

Thank you all for your responses to my request and apologies for taking so long to reply. Looks to me like Thomas and Martha Taplin are the most likely bets for the parents of the William Taplin I am working on.
