Haslett Hazlett Haslet McCloskey Dungiven
« on: Thursday 21 May 20 14:03 BST (UK) »
Hi all,
Stumbled across this site while bumbling through my ancestry.
My fathers Haslett from Dungiven, Grandmother Cassie McCloskey married John Haslett around 1900 which wouldn't be too hard to find if I had any dates of birth.
I've seen a few posts with this name combination, but can't directly message anybody since I'm a newbie.  I'd like to hear from anybody who has advice on which direction to start the search.
Thanks

Hi, I am descended from the Hasletts of Drumneecy  which is about 4 miles north of Dungiven. I have done extensive research on the Haslett family both locally and in the Public Record office in Belfast., starting with John Haslett born c 1665 However I have not come across a Haslett/ McCloskey marriage in the area. If you have any further details I will be happy to help

There's a marriage for those names in St. Patrick's Dungiven in 1918, free to view here:

The townland mentioned in the marriage record and also on son James's birth record is Ballyhargan (sic), which is actually Ballyharigan.
https://www.townlands.ie/londonderry/keenaght/bovevagh/ballyharigan/ west of Dungiven.

Hi all,
Thanks for the replies, still can't send or reply to messages, not sure what's going on with that but I'll get it fixed.
The latest I have on the story is that John Hazlett was born protestant but was baptised roman catholic to marry Kathleen/Catherine/Cassie McCloskey around 1918, based on the first daughter being born in 1924, Julia Hazlett, then Jean and so on.
I understand the name Hazlett is spelled with a Z by catholics and S by protestants.
The area Ballyhargan seems like the most likely bet for their marriage, I have to double check with my father, he had moved back to the area but can't find much info from family.
Thanks

Not true- spelling for Irish names, until fairly recently, was very fluid so you can't make assumptions. I know some Catholic Hasletts and lots of Protestant Hazletts.

If John Hazlett was Protestant then it's quite possible he was re-baptised by priest in order to marry in the chapel so would be worth looking for an adult baptism on the day or or shortly before the marriage ceremony.

The 1918 marriage says that John's father was deceased. Based on that and John's residence in 1918 (which is where he was living at the time but may not be where his family lived) this is possible (Presbyterian) family-

Dernaflaw (Derrynaflaw) is next townland to Ballyharigan-

Possible death for John Haslett in Dec.1917-

Same family in 1901- John Sr.'s mother in household likely looked after house and children as John's wife was already dead by this time-

John Haslett born 1895 at Derrynaflaw- mother Bridget McCloskey. Perhaps a mixed marriage?

Marriage of John & Biddy 1889 (Presbyterian)-

Death of Bridget- only 28 years old- on 7 Feb.1897 and daughter Mary Ann died 23 January only 6 weeks old- not surprising when Bridget's cause of death is tuberculosis which she had 3 months (although likely longer)-
