Thanks a lot for your help. I don't have birth or death dates for Elspeth Ker and her husband. John Paterson (Elspeth's son) was born in 1793 (no death date).

I have that Agnes Adamson was born in 1806. Her husband (Charles Smith) was born in 1806 and died in 1859. Her son (Charles Smith) was born in 1829 (no death date), and he was married to Catherine Forsan (born in 1830).

All in Scotland (maybe around Galashiels). That's all I have.

Hi Monica - That certainly looks like the family. On the family tree that you linked, the birth date for the son (Charles Smith) of Agnes Adamson is 15 JULY 1827. I have "about 1829" so it's pretty close and looks more exact than what I have. Thank you again, so much!  Bill

The birth index for Charles from Family Search shows 15 July 1827. You should be able to find Charles' christening/birth entry on the Old Parish Register on Scotlands People.

This is Charles I think after his marriage and his mother Agnes in the household:

Charles Smith 32 farmer of 40 acres b. Gladsmuir, east lothian
Catherine Smith 31 b. Merton, Roxburghshire
Charles Smith 7
Jane Smith 6
Elisabeth Smith 9 Months
Agnes Smith 9 Months
Agnes Adamson 59 mother b, Whittingham, East Lothian
Adam Scott 16 ploughman b. Melrose, Roxburghshire

Address: Newstead, Melrose Rox.

Yes, that is definitely them. Agnes and Elisabeth (both age 9 months in the census) were twins. Agnes eventually married William Patterson and moved with him to Baltimore, Maryland where they started a florist business. Agnes and William were my great-grandparents (from my mother Dorothy and her mother Charlotte). I was born and grew up in Baltimore. Very exciting! Thank you so much!

Possible death for mother Agnes Adamson/Smith in Peebles in 1883 at the age of 81. Worth viewing on SP to let you confirm her parents' names.

Charles' brother Robert looks to have headed off to Australia www.wikitree.com/wiki/Smith-147826

Sister Margaret you have details of her from that family tree that you could follow up and confirm.

Possible entry for Agnes with daughter Janet in 1881:

Charles Stone 43 b. Prestonpans, Haddingtonshire (can't make out his occupation)
Janet Stone 45 b. Atholstoneford, Haddingtonshire
Agnes Smith 79 mother in law b. Whitingham, Haddingtonshire
George Stone 9
Janet Stone 6

Address: Cross Street, Peebles

Family name is Storie rather than Stone. Mum Agnes shows as living with them in 1871 in Longniddry Station, Gladsmuir. The original image would help. Their marriage here on the index www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XTR2-652 (original cert on SP).

Charles Snr was not with Agnes on the 1851 census:

Agnes Smith 47 Out Worker
Robert Smith 19
Margaret Smith 11
Ann Clyde 70 boarder
Alexander Mc Kenzie 10 boarder
Agnes Mc Kenzie 8 boarder

Address: Markle, Prestonkirk East Lothian

What is the source for him having died in 1859?

Charles Smith Snr was already deceased by the time of the 1851 census (explains why there were only four children from the marriage maybe?).

From another transcript for the 1851 census, Agnes shows as widowed by 1851: www.freecen.org.uk/search_records/5a149ab9f4040b9d6e972ae1/agnes-smith-1851-east-lothian-prestonkirk-1804-?locale=en

Thank you again, Monica. I'll have to check on the death date for Charles. I don't think it was exact (just about), so I'm sure you're correct with him passing before 1851.
