I think the date of 1859 has likely been taken from son Charles' 1859 marriage entry with father Charles simple showing as deceased.

Can't see any reference to his death unfortunately. Official registration in Scotland started in 1855. Before this, you are reliant on the Old Parish Registers. Death & burial entries were the worst kept and very patchy throughout Scotland.

Have a search around on this site. Free to search and view as it says in the name!

Charles' 1827 parish entry has been transcribed here www.freereg.org.uk/search_records/581812fae93790ec8bae42dd/charles-smith-baptism-east-lothian-prestonkirk-1827-?locale=en

You sometimes get clues as to other family members if other names are mentioned in the entries, such as sponsors to baptisms.

Main site here www.freereg.org.uk If you I would also tick for family members and witnesses for any given name you search.

From his OPR entry in 1827, birth place is given as Trabrown Parish of Gladsmuir. See below a description of this place from 1853-54.

These are the marriage details from the OPR entry for Agnes and Charles www.freereg.org.uk/search_records/5817d490e93790eb7fa50cd8/agnes-adamson-charles-smith-marriage-east-lothian-tranent-1825-12-05?locale=en

You are in luck! Quite often these are no more than the names of bride and groom and a date on a page.

This should hopefully match what will show on her death reg.

I will leave you to work through....

So, from the marriage record, John Adamson was the father of Agnes Adamson. And the 15 July 1827 birthdate for Charles Smith is obviously correct. Thank you again.  Bill
