Donnybrook, D4
« on: Friday 08 May 20 23:27 BST (UK) »
Is anyone familiar with 'Mill House' in Donnybrook, I am looking at 1902. Would this be an area?
I noticed the family were showing up in Pembroke Cottages, Donnybrook a few years later and wondered if perhaps they were one and the same and it is just a road name change?
Thanks !

This is a map showing donnybrook
https://www.viamichelin.co.uk/web/Maps/Map-Donnybrook-_-Dublin-Ireland

Go back to the census that you found it, look to see what number it is, as you look down you will see a House and buildings section highlighted, look in there and find the number you have, this will also tell you if there is a public house, school or church etc.
If you can't see this send me the names you were looking for and I will do it.
Mill House, there are a lot called Mill House now, the above is the easiest way to identify the place.
If you search Pembroke Cottages, make sure it's Dublin 4.
ok

Using the old maps on GeoHive
http://map.geohive.ie/mapviewer.html
There was an area on the 1837 to 1842 map called Mill Mount, there was a saw mill there, the later map of 1888 to 1913 has a house Millbrook in the same area. On the modern this the Eglinton Sq area.
That's the only reference I can see to a Mill in the townland of Donnybrook, which is smaller I think than the area we would call Donnybrook today.

Thanks All.  I did not obtain the information from the census. It appears on a baptism certificate.
The baptism took place on 11 November 1901, the address shown is Mill House, Donnybrook.
The 1901 census, which I believe took place in March, shows the family at Grattan Court.
The 1911 census shows them at Pembroke Cottages. With two sides of the family to work on, initially you feel elated when you find something, then another piece by the time you find a third, you sometimes begin doubting whether the pieces do actually all join up, such common names do not make it any easier.
If I want to look for births prior to 1864, am I reliant upon the church records, knowing where they resided at the time and figuring out the Parish?
Much appreciated !

Rosanna Mary Byrne?
As her father was a labourer than its quite possibly they moved house fairly often.

Yes pre 1864 you will need parish registers. A lot depends on how settled the family was in one area, (RC Parishes are quite big so even moving house a bit people were usually in the same parish, although in the city this may not apply), if the names are very common it is possible to get two couples with the same names having children at the same time but usually once you have both parents names you should be able to manage. Baptisims don't always give an address, handy when they do and even better if the family stay in one place.

This will give you an idea of how big Donnybrook parish is/was

Click on each civil parish to see the townlands or towns.

I hope they weren't in Donnybrook before 1864 the records only start 1871
