Stevens 1871 census
« on: Tuesday 23 August 05 04:33 BST (UK) »
I am looking for the following family in the 1871 census in the London area:
George STEVENS born c1822 Drewsteignton, Devon
Elizabeth STEVENS born c1825 Drewsteignton
Elizabeth STEVENS born c1850 London
William George STEVENS born c1853 Chichester, Sussex
James Henry born c1858 London
Arthur Ernest STEVENS born c1861 London

I have their details from the 1861 census and some of the children from the 1881 census. Parents are missing in the 1881 census so I am presuming they are dead.

Also Eva PAYNE born c1851 Southsea, Hampshire who married William George STEVENS

Thanks

Hi Spaceman,

The only one I can find is Wm George Stevens, 18, Chichester, a waiter at the Army & Navy Club, 36-39 Pall Mall.

Thanks Ros

Wm George seems to be correct as he is still a waiter in the 1901 census.

Arthur Ernest possibly (called Ernest) should be around somewhere as he is in the 1881 census and didn't come out to Australia and then New Zealand until 1883.

The other two children could have died young as I haven't located them in the 1881 census.

There is a mention of a Lillie STEVENS in Arthur's 1883 diary, covering his trip from London to Australia, that shows her living in London. I haven't been able to establish if Elizabeth and Lillie are the same person.

Regards

Hello spaceman

I'm doing a bit of regular housekeeping and noticed this older request.  Wondering if you are still looking for anything on this topic or you have resolved it in the meantime?  If you're still looking, this might be a tough one to find so do you have any further info to add that might assist finding them?

If we don't hear from you in a while, I'll assume the latter and move it to the 'completed' section.

Hi

I had very little response and nothing was resolved.

It is possible Arthur (Ernest) was at a Blue Coat School at this time although I have not been able to confirm that he attended the school that later moved south of London.

Hi

I've not been able to find anything in addition to what has already been proposed.  Perhaps since you're familiar with the family it may be a good idea to look for the deaths to provide further clues?

There is a guide here http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,101469.0.html and also www.ancestry.co.uk has a free but incomplete beta version at the moment.

Good luck

Thanks for the comments.

I did purchase some certificates a few years ago but all proved not relevant.

Your suggestions has reminded me I must have a look at information now available on 1837 on-line and freebmd.
