Hi again and thanks for all info.

Getting back to William and Margaret Ball on board the James Gibb in 1850, I'm still hoping there may be some way of finding an official passenger list for the ship with the names of their children listed.
...or even William Ball and family etc.
Are there any departure lists from Plymouth at the start of the family's trip to Australia?

Any help much appreciated.

Dougmc

Very unlikely, and I imagine would have been found by other researchers by now

'Passenger departure lists are rare before 1890'

Do you have names and birth years for all the children who may have travelled?

This website is a comprehensive shipping and passenger source
https://bound-for-south-australia.collections.slsa.sa.gov.au/BeginningYourJourney.htm

At the top of this page is a statement to the effect-there are no other sources known.
https://bound-for-south-australia.collections.slsa.sa.gov.au/ShipLists%20Alpha%20by%20Year/1836-1851Passengers-AlphaList.htm

Biographical Index of South Australians.

BALL, William. Born 1833 died 5/2/1871. Buried WTC. Arrived by 1868. Residence Adelaide. Married Margaret born c. 1821. Died 14/8/1904
Children. Son. Charlotte died infancy. William (1844 -1868). James.

So not much more than you already knew.

Thanks Sue,
Certainly that family.

Hi Matthew..We think the following children would have been on the boat to Australia with their parents.
John Gow Ball b.1838, Ann(e) b.1840, William b,1844, James b,1847 and baby Margaret b. 1850

Thanks to all for work done and any follow-ups!
kind regards,
Dougmc

William Ball and Margaret Bailey are my great, great grandparents. From research by my late aunt more than 30 years ago, which included interviews with her father (William's grandson), we have the following:
William b. c1813, d.1871.
Margaret b.1821, d.1904
First two children not known but believed born in England and we don't know whether they came to South Australia, died in infancy or stayed in England.
William: b. 1844, d.1868
James: b.1847, d.1926
Margaret: b.c1850, d.1926
Eliza: b.1851, d. ?
Amelia: b.1853, d. ?
Charlotte: birth and death unknown, died in infancy
Charles: b.1863, d.1930
