Hi all

Has anyone come across the following surnames?

SMALL, MACKIN/G/S, NORMANDALE, HEDLEY

Any reports of sightings welcome!

Hi Jan,

This is only a little bit about a Hedley, but you never know what is going to fit!

One of my 3 x great grandfathers was Robert Strong, born 18th July, 1799, and he had a younger brother called Nicholas - this is where Jane Hedley fits in.

Jane Hedley married Nicholas Strong, probably before records started in 1837 as I can not find their marriage details, but I do know that Nicholas was born 18th December, 1801, and Christened in Newburn on 21st March, 1802. They had at least four children that I know of:-
 
Robert Hedley Strong, born 23rd May, 1840 at Howden Pans,
Charles Strong born 3rd August, 1842 at Howden Pans
Margaret Strong born c1850 Howden Pans
Mary E. Strong born c1852 Howden Pans

The family moved from the north east to Cardiff and by the time of the 1871 census Nicholas was a widower and living at 22 London Square, Cardiff. He was a retired Master Mariner. Living with him were his daughters Margaret & Mary.

Next door at number 21 London Square was son Robert Hedley Strong and his wife Lucy. They had married during the March quarter of 1863 in Axbridge 5c 919. They had a son John Nicholas Strong who went on to marry Clara.

By the time of the 1901 census John Nicholas & Clara had a son called John Hedley Strong who had been born in Penarth, so obviously the name Hedley was important to them to have carried it through so many generations.

Sorry but I have not found anything else out about Jane Hedley at the moment.

I know very little about the Hedley line. My gg grandfather married Margaret Hedley at Christ Church, North Shields in 1831 and that's all I know! Maybe there will be a connection with Jane at some point, who knows? I find it's worth holding on to details like yours - our trees may have sprouted a few more twigs in a year or so!

I also am interested in the name Hedley. My hedley family started off in Newburn Northumberland with William Hedley being married to Elizabeth Fletcher. They had a number of children and through one of their sons, Thomas born in 1786, the  family eventually ended up in South Shields. Would be interested in hearing if anyone has information.

My ggg grandmother, Martha Golightly, married George HEDLEY sometime after 1857.  She had a daughter, Isabelle, in that year, with no father named on the birth certificate.  Then, I found George and Martha in the 1881 census, married with 7 additional children, the oldest born in about 1861.  The children are William, George, James, Margaret, Martha, Frank, and John.  This is as far as I've gotten with the Hedley line.  Unless Isabelle was actually George's biological daughter, Hedley's would be relatives by marriage only.

I am a Strong, and my family tree research has taken me back to around 1800. I am the son of John Hedley Strong (1888-1963), grandson of John Nicholas Strong (1860-1952) and great grandson of Robert Hedley Strong (1840-1923). The last-named was son of Nicholas Strong and Jane Hedley. She is believed to be of the Hedley family of Morpeth. I have a mourning ring dated 1801 of the infant Robert Hedley who died that year aged 10 months. Bishop Hedley (Roman Catholic) who died 1915 was of this family and was known by my late cousin Gwen Bruce (incidentally one of the first 4 women called to the Bar!)
