 Have a querry, a person  in my family tree murdered is wife .was a trial  .been trying to find what sentence was given. or did he die in prison. was over a hundred years ago.but afraid  to put where murder took place .and is name .in case the children who were very young at the time.have family in the area .might not want is name said. is it possible to ask for a death cert. if tell them who father was and mother. even if cannot say when died. mike

Same comment as Jamjar.  Surely the children already know who their parents were so if you mean who his parents were  English death certs don't give parents names.

Look up his death on freebmd

If the murder took place over 100yrs  ago he should be on the 1911 census or look for his birth on freebmd

Or - Buy a copy of the marriage cert which will give his fathers name

Not sure if I have understood correctly, but I thought that the OP meant that they did not want to mention any names in regards to this family in case there are living family who may find this thread and who perhaps either did not know about the murder or may not want anyone else finding out.

Added: there may be reports of the murder and trial in the local or national newspapers of the time. I think many have been digitised and viewable online via subscription. If you start a new thread requesting a newspaper lookup you may find that someone is able to do this for you via Personal Message as you do not want to give the names on this public forum.

 Thank you for all the replies. should have said do no the fathers name and mothers of the person who did the murder .also read the trial report . in the newspaper at the time ..though strange to say not found a report in any paper where murder took place .the papers do not say what sentence given .as to ask who.thought could ring  record office .just needed some advice .of best way to find more information.but also been careful of what rules you have in place about mentioning certain people.mike

Ancestry has some records of court sentences, have you tried searching on there? The ones I have seen have been for Yorkshire.

 thank you .yes had a look on ancestry .but no luck.but did  try free bmd . got a death in 1937 .but death is in same town  did the murder. do no there is no place to keep him in prison there. as you suggest maybe should buy the death cert. just  found with this sites help.will clear  up  where died. mike

Exactly - which is why I suggested he did the looking up himself - that way no names are mentioned here.  He is an experienced poster which is why I didn't put any links to freebmd/GRO

So what you are saying is you already know his parentage and already have a newspaper report of the trial

You already have his death in 1937 from freebmd 

So - apart from finding what length sentence he received there doesn't seem to be anything else.  Is that correct?

The death cert will tell you where he died.  If not in prison and you already know the trial date - then you will know he received a sentence of somewhere between the 2 dates
