Hi,
I have found a Merchant Seaman record which may be for a forebear of mine.  t is for James Rugg, b. 1831 Somersetshire on Findmypast.  He is listed as being on what looks like the ship Canning, which left London on 10 / 14 or 19 March 1855.
I have found this ship in the Lloyds Lists for 1855.  It says it was built by Somes Bros. at a place called "Molmn" in 1854 and was destined for a London India voyage.
I have the British Newspaper archive but can't find details of any departures of this ship.  This may be because I am not searching properly though.
I have also searched around for details on Somes Bros. but although I can see them referred to I can't see any details of them, even when I look on ships List websites.
I have searched to see if there crew's lists on National Archives, but it doesn't look as if they exist for this ship, which I know is not unusual.
Could anyone please suggest where I might look to find details on the Canning and also Somes Bros.
Many thanks for all your help,
KESTON.
