Percy Randle 1918 Cemetery??
« on: Saturday 18 April 20 12:27 BST (UK) »
Hi, I’m looking for help finding the cemetery where Percy Enos Randle who died 19th June 1918 in the District of Milton Borough of Glasgow is buried. I am trying to get him recognised by the CWGC and have submitted his death certificate that records him dying of TB caused by his service during the First World War. To aid my cause I need to identify where he is buried, I have tried different 'find a grave/monuments' sites without any luck. Any help would be gratefully received.

Regards Doug.

It's frequently difficult to determine a burial place.
Collect together what you know - you have his death extract.

How do you know he was buried?  or could it be cremation?

His name is not noticeably Glaswegian - was his home town somewhere else?  In England    perhaps? What about his parents and other close family?  He may be buried with them.

What religion (if any) was he, that may reduce number of possible locations.

Are there any family documents, letters, photographs that relate to a location.

He was in The Forces - records at NA or MOD may pinpoint further details.

Look for an obituary or death notice in Glasgow Herald or Evening Times archives - that may say.

Edit:  now added this...
I assume you have seen, or maybe even wrote, this :

To echo the comments by Grenrig - experience has shown that place of death does not always equate to place of burial.

Having read the information in that excellent link we have three distinct areas to consider

1. Glasgow - given the location of the death in Garnethill (just north west of the current City Centre) there are several major cemeteries within a short distance. Sighthill and the Western Necropolis are possibly the closest. The question of Religion also pops up its ugly head as this sadly also has a bearing on the burial grounds - if he was Roman Catholic St. Kentigerns is a possible.

Who buried him - if family there's a good chance he was moved south - having an estate of £69 may have helped (valued at just under £4000 today)

2. Sunderland where his wife was reported as living

3. Wolverhampton his home town.

PS although the lair records (burial plots) archives of Glasgow cemeteries have been digitised they are not all available to the public and are only available at the Mitchell Library in Glasgow which is presently closed.

Check the Mitchell website to see what they have available online https://www.glasgowlife.org.uk/libraries/city-archives

There is an article in The Fifeshire Advertiser dated 22 Jun 1918.
The article refers to his brother in law, Mr Fred Collins. ( Fred Collins, Company of Entertainers)

Mr Collins and his group played at The Beach Pavillion in Burntisland that week but it simply mentioned that Percy Randle was his brother in law who died at Fred's home in Glasgow.

It stated that Percy was a frequent visitor to the town and I assume it refers to Burntisland rather than Glasgow

This ties in with the Post Office Directories 1917 to 1920 which list Mr F Collins at 107 Hill Street, Garnethill.

Thank you all very much for your help and guidance, it is appreciated. I'm being a big thick thinking that just because he died in Glasgow he was buried there and that he would be buried not cremated. I was aware that he was employed as a music hall agent that's how i knew he was in Glasgow and wrongly thought he might be buried there.
Now knowing his wife was living in Sunderland I will try there.

Regards Doug
