I think the 1901 census may have him down as Bernard, if I am looking at the right entry

Bryan and Bernard are apparently first name variants. See www.whatsinaname.net/php/search.php?action=search2&search_name=brian

This site is the first I go to to check on first name variants. There are many name variants with Scottish/Irish first names.
