Looking for Cemetery of burial for Solomon Bockron / Bockerah
« on: Sunday 05 April 20 06:05 BST (UK) »
Hello everyone my ancestor Solomon Bockron died on 16th July 1791 a convict Jew, buried at Sydney Cove [ source Johnson’s register of burials ] in a forgotten piece of land designated by Governor Philip... Solomon was the first person to be recognised as a Jew to be buried by Rev. Richard Johnson. Solomon’s wife Ann or Sarah Buckril is buried at St Johns cemetery, Parramatta she died 1793. Her gravestone was paid for by Judge Advocate Richard Atkins. I just trying to locate Solomon’s final resting place.
Thank you
Murray Kelly

This says 'by 1793' but is not definitive as to exactly when burials began on this site.
By 1793 the principal burial ground for the colony was on the site where the Sydney Town Hall now stands, on the corner of George and Druitt streets. This cemetery is commonly called the Old Sydney Burial Ground, but it is also known as the George Street Burial Ground, the Cathedral Close Cemetery, and the Town Hall Cemetery.

1791 burial of a convict ...  ... possibly buried on western side of Sydney Cove, in the then hospital grounds, otherwise on the eastern side, in the grounds occupied by the governor ....  so convicts on western side,  Admin on eastern side and The Tank Stream to separate them.

ADD ... I am not at home, and I have not found confirming reliable info via Google, so I  am relying on my own grey cells... so please check and re-check ... but ... I think... 1791 ... Third Fleet convicts disembarked at The Hospital Wharf, Sydney Cove ... and I think that wharf would have been about where those cruise ships that have been in the news at present embark and disembark in Sydney Cove ... western side, but back about 100 or so yards ... afterall even Cadman's Cottage used to be right on the Cove and it dates from mid 1810s.  Of course not up The Rocks.

Can't help with the burial place of Solomon Bockerah, but just for the record the trace for me is Sarah Bockerah, John Laurie, Astley Laurie, Te Rangiata, Annie Laurie, Mary Jane Edwards, Archibald, Allan , Spencer. My DNA says I have some Jewish and here I have found it!!!
