Thank you.. I Know his name ( James O'Neill)and have him on 1901 and 1911 census, I have a death registration for him (who I thought might be him) in July 1920.. and His wife (Esther O'Neill) in july 1921 (in the Magherafelt workhouse which states she was married not widowed) So I have since found a death in Sept 1921 which maybe  him , although the age is out !::)  Still hunting till I can confirm it ha!

Thank you all for your help.

So where was he then?

Ex.The Barracks is only a previous address... it could be Ex Belfast or Ex Cork etc if he had lived Belfast or Cork

Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.

That site only has those records for what is now the Republic of Ireland. For Northern Ireland the marriages and deaths stop at 31.12.1921. Only GRONI has post 1921 records for Northern Ireland.

Give us a link to your James in the 1901 or 1911 census and we’ll see if we can locate a death that might fit.

The death for Esther on 22.7.1921 gives her townland as Creagh. There is a James O’Neill listed in Creagh in the Valuation Revision records (plot 40 which was a house and just under 2 acres). He is listed there till 1929 which is when those records stop. So it might be the correct couple.

The workhouse admission records for 1921 are in PRONI.  Those records will be closed until July 1921 under the 100 year rule, though it is still possible to make an FOI request to view them. The records should show whether Esther’s husband was James.  (PRONI itself is closed at present due to Covid 19).

If it’s the right Esther, James was alive in July 1921. There are quite a few James O’Neill deaths after that in the Magherafelt area, in the GRONI records. Closest to James aged 77 in 1911 was one on 15.2.1928, aged 88. That’s 10 years out but ages were often just guesses then so it might be him.  You would need to pay to view it to find out.
