Newent graves
« on: Monday 22 August 05 11:13 BST (UK) »
I have a book on Newent which mentions that the gravestone inscriptions for both St Mary's church and Watery Lane cemetary have been transcribed (in the 1980's) - does anyone know how I can get hold of copies?

Thanks
Gillj

I'm after any Jenkins in these graveyards. I've traced my father-in-laws rellies back to Hiram Jenkins (1758-1837) and on a visit found a memorial to his son Philip in St Mary's.
We bought the book 'Chapters in Newent's History' whilst we were there and Hiram is mentioned in there as having repaired the church bell - a great find! The book makes reference to St Mary's Church Survey by Frances Penney in 1988 and St Mary's churchyard survey by F Penney/D A Pearce in 1987 - it is these I'm trying to get hold of.

I hope to get down to Gloster in the next day or so and I will have a look for you.  I have not heard about the books you mentioned

Hi Gill

If you write to the Newent Local History Society, who produced the book, I'm sure they would be able to help.  The address is on the GENUKI page for Newent.
