 very interesting - Barnton is 5 miles from Preston Brook by road - probably less along the Canal - so was Henry Hitchens a Boatman ??  do you know ? 
Barges were moored at Preston Brook - it only closed march 2019 - and the only occupation in Preston Brook was boatmen - The Wharf - I suppose he could have been an Ag Lab  but along that stretch of water it was Barnton and then Northwich - SALT trade and very busy

Just to add to confusion there was another Henry born earlier

He died in 1831.

The Henry for the birth in 1829 is the older brother whom sadly died in 1831 burred at Witton-cum, Twambrook

In 1851 he was a labourer.  He wasn't at home with Eliza and the children in 1841.

The New Zealand Gazette of 1886 has a brief note that Lieutenant Henry Albert Holland Hitchens resignation of commission was accepted by the Governor.

Is there more than one H A H Hitchens in NZ at this time?

The documents about his life that was published on his death to me do not show the life of the Son of a labourer.

The Henry Hitchens born c.1840 in Northwich who was listed as a Corporal at Walmer Barracks in the 1861 census was actually in the 2nd Btn 2nd Foot ( Queen’s Royal ) Depot

 I am glad someone else has picked up on the high living of a laborers son, if Henry and Eliza are his parents I have the rest of his family in the union poor houses so how dose one go from the poor house to a social light in New Zealand it does not make sense to me.

Yes  sadly he has left no information about his parents. I find it interesting that he seems so educated and has fine writing skills for a laborers son, as I stated If? Henry and Eliza are his parents and they are in the union poor houses how has he got out of the poor house and got medical training to take himself to New Zealand and be come a Mason and other social standings is troubling me no end.   I do Thank all of you for your help and tips I will have to keep digging along.

A birth certificate for Thomas Henry HITCHENS, and later children, will include age and birthplace for parents.

The Cheshire birthplace is recorded after the death of Henry HITCHENS.

It would be useful to see how his age and birthplace is recorded during his lifetime, and, hopefully with himself as the informant.

so I have Lawrence Roy Hitchens birth registration, it has Henry A.H Hitchens at 55 years in 1895 and place as Cheshire so im still looking at 1840,  his death registration has him at 67 in 1906 still has me in 1839 and the marriage in 1865 says 22 which makes 1843 and if the 1851 census with Eliza and Henry is right was 11 years old makes 1840. I am still looking around the 1839 to possibly 1840 ish
  i still am unsure of whom his parents are?
