Jesse Walter - missing person...
« on: Saturday 28 March 20 21:08 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I hhope i've posted this in the right place!

I know a lot about this ancestor i've got here, Jesse Walter - b. 1850 in Berkshire to Elijah & Hannah Walter /walker.

I know most of the details about him, all the children and census entries up to 1891 - where he's in Paddington, with 3 children, Herbert, Earnest & Jessie. His wife (Eliza) dies in about 1892, but 1901 onwards he starts using other names like Henry and William (maybe, in 1911).

He died on 24th Feb 1918 (I have the certificate.) That's where i've hit a problem. His informant is listed as Lucy Walter, widow. But i've got no idea who she is, where a marriage note is (if it happened at all, or just put on the form that way) or what happened.

It's clear 18 months later his son Herbert and wife got married and were living at the same address - in October 1919 - but I can't find any evidence of her.

Plus i'm missing reliable info about Jesse from 1903 onwards and seems sketchy. Does anyone know anything I don't here? as i'm getting confused.

If any other info is needed, I'll add some.

Thanks,
Richard

What marital status does he give on later census and is he back to Jesse on the death certificate?

Is that the only sign of Lucy - have you found a death for her.

Can you describe the family you are seeing in the 1891 Census....names, ages, birthplace, address.

Can you describe the family you are seeing in the 1901 Census.....names, ages, birthplace, address.

What is the address you have for the 1918 death, and the 1919 marriage.

1891 he is Henry but born Herefordshire Hereford not Faringdon Berkshire as on earlier census  :-\

When did Jesse marry Eliza?

This is the 1891 I am looking at

Henry Walter 39 coachman
Eliza 38 born Bury St Edmunds
Herbert 16 born Bury St Edmunds
Jessie 15 born Hampstead
Ernest 10 born Hampstead

Yes confusing when Jessie daughter marries she puts father as Henry
but when son Ernest marries he puts father as Jesse so they do appear to be the same person.

The 1891 census listed by Milliepede is correct.

The 1901 census I had shoeboxed on Ancestry says:
Henry Walter 48 looks Like Wdow in the status box. Also can't even read where it says he's born. Looks like N. K. and three letters after, impossible to tell.
Jessie (15 in 1891) died in 1900. - I know this, because I've obtained the death certificate, and Jesse Walter was the informant. And happened at the same address.
Herbert wasn't there.
Earnest is listed. Age 20 looks like Metal something for job, looks like London St. Pancras but again, very hard to read.

I see the 1901 now thanks.

Birthplaces are transcribed as

Henry - N, England - I read it as N K Eng(land) and agree he is widower stableman groom

Ernest - St John Wood, London, England metal plater?
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire

1911 is even harder. I think I only found it as someone listed as "william walter" as a lodger with another family, who's about 60 years old at the time.

1918, at the end they lived at 64 blomfield road, london. Herbert, the son, lived there after he died, but what happened before 1918 i'm not sure, and I can't access the Electoral Roll - as he's listed on ancestry multiple times (anything around Paddington, i'm convinced is him, as he died there.)

Does the death have an occupation for him?

So "Lucy" only appears sometime after 1911 and before 1918.
