Hoping that someone can just clarify the conflicting details I have regarding Jane Metcalf and particularly her ancestors, please.
I believe Jane was baptized Feb. 9th 1729, (1728 old calendar?), at Thornton Steward, N. Yorks. I have her parents as William Metcalf and Margaret Edmundson, and this is where things become slightly mixed up.
In the area around Askrigg and Thornton Steward there seems to be a large number of Metcalfs, resulting in the following confusion.
There is a John Metcalf, bap. 4/9/1698 at Wensley who married a Margaret Edmundson 30/5/1727 Thornton Steward, he died 3/6/1760, same place.
There is a William Metcalf, born 21/8/1698 Leyburn who married a Margaret Walton 30/5/1727 at Thornton Steward, he seemingly died 24/6/1760.
There is a William Bryan Metcalf, shown bap. 21/8/1698, who married a Margaret Lupton 30/10/1725 at Aysgarth, he also seemingly died 24/6/1760.
This information is taken from a variety if family trees and obviously whist some may be correct, they are confusing.
If my original findings were correct, William's parents would be Christopher and Catherine Leake, but is there any chance you could sort the wheat from the chaff please ?
Interestingly if Christopher Metcalf is the correct family ancestor, he is buried at the Quaker cemetery at Bainbridge.....first intimation of Quaker involvement.
Thanks
