Help required in deciphering 1871 Scottish Census
« on: Sunday 22 March 20 21:17 GMT (UK) »
Would appreciate any help/views on the attached 1871 Dalkeith Census record.  Record number 11 (Peter Cairney) where born is unrecognisable (looks like Africa) but it wasn't.    Similarly record number 3 is also indistinguishable to me (looks like Audia) but I doubt it....

Agree it sure looks like Africa.

How do you know it wasn't?   Have you other proof?

Record number 3 says India and the one for Peter certainly looks like Africa. FindMyPast has it transcribed as United States.

My grandfather's brother born in Glasgow in the 1850s went to Africa in the 1870s and that's where his son was born.   Britain colonised the tip of South Africa and the Boers and natives had the rest.

To be precise it was known as the "Cape Colony, Africa"

Peter Cairney (General Labourer) - place of birth:
1841 census has Ireland,
1851 census has Glasgow Lanarkshire,
1861 census has Glasgow Lanarkshire,
1881 census has Glasgow Lanarkshire.

1871 - Africa seem improbable.

I'd guess Judea for the third one (or failing that India). For the other, I'd have to say it looks more like Africa than anything else as well.

India for the third name and Africa without doubt for Peter Cairney. I do have some examples of people who although born in Scotland have their place of birth shown as Ireland. In each case they had spent time in Ireland.so is it possible that Peter had been in Africa? Also have you been able to discover the place of birth of his siblings or parents?
