Re the 21 Feb 1839, Gorton death, Thomas was 44 - abode Openshaw.

They were living in Openshaw when John was born.

Oh this may explain why I haven't been able to confirm a proper census for Thomas.

FindMyPast baptism
Elizabeth Artingstall, July 9th 1837, parents Thomas and Ann, abode Gorton, father's occupation "Hatter". Unfortunately, she doesn't make the GRO to confirm mother's maiden name.

There's a transcribed baptism for a James Artingstall, 13 Jun 1830, Manchester, parents Thomas and Ann but occupation not transcribed.

FindMyPast has the marriage (transcription only) of a Thomas Artingstall and Ann Wilde, 1827. How clear is the mother's maiden name on the birth certificate? The GRO has recorded John's mother's maiden name as Wood.

It says Woods I think, but could be Wood.

Struggling to find Ann (YoB ?), Elizabeth (1837) and John (1839) on the '41 Census!!

There's this death -

GRO - Ann Artingstall, age 38, Mar Qtr 1842, Manchester
Parish Burials (FindMyPast) - Ann Artinstall (sic), abode Ancoats, buried Feb 22 1842, age 38.  Age "fits" a marriage with Thomas, aged 44 at death in 1839.

Have tried searching '41 Census under initials only (workhouse/institutions practice to record initials only) but drawing a blank.

I can't spot any missing Census returns for the area we are interested in. Nor can I find a marriage between Thomas' death 1839 and the '41 Census for an Ann Artingstall (his possible widow).
