Hi,
Can anyone tell me where I might find a Catechist List for the Isle of Coll?
I hit a brick wall with my 4xGG John McKenzie, son of John McKenzie & Peggy. But I have just come across a family tree online where they seem to have more information based on said 'Catechist List' (CL).
In this tree it is written that my 4xGG was the youngest Son of John Matheson & Margaret MacKay according to the CL. Other children include - Allan Matheson McKenzie 1769, Janet Matheson McKenzie 1771, Flora Matheson McKenzie 1773, Catherine McKenzie 1775, John McKenzie 1776 (my 4xGG), & Donald Matheson McKenzie 1777. All of the sons of John & Margaret are said to have joined the army, which my 4xGG did along with a brother Allan. Their residence in the 1776 CL is listed as Bousd, Coll.
The parents of John Matheson/McKenzie are Murdoch Allan McKenzie b.1670 Kintail, Ross-shire, reputed to be the first McKenzie of Coll. He married Mary Camerson in 1694 at Kintail. Mary Cameron is reputed to be a daughter of 'Big' Ludovic Cameron who is said to have been executed around 1689, by the English as a leader of the Jacobite cause, leading to his family fleeing to Kintail, Lord Seaforh McKenzie's area of the Scottish Highlands.
John McKenzie (4xGG) c.1776-1857 > John McKenzie or Matheson c.1710 > Murdoch Allan McKenzie c.1670, husband of Mary Cameron c.1670 > 'Big' Ludovic Cameron c.1640-c.1689
I am not one to follow a trail withouth being certain hence why I am looking to clear this up if possible, I have messaged the owner of the tree but no response yet. Hopefully I can find this CL and make sense of the McKenzie/Matheson conundrum.
Thanks - Keelan
