Hi
He wasn't an easy man to follow. His name is Johan Bernhard Johansson or Olsson.
I have found him and his family. According to his birth record he was born 3 Dec 1854 and christened 5 Dec but his examination (census) records his birth is recorded as 5 Dec 1854.
This is his last record in Sweden - family 19-21. He is recorded as being in USA on the right hand side:

Thank you for that - so Hogan isn't the real last name at all then.

Hmmmm........ I looked further into this family and found that this Johan apparently died in USA in 1881 on 29 Oct.
On the right hand side it says "dead in USA according to letter from his sister and relatives":

I'm not too sure what to say about this. He perhaps isn't the right man.

I don't know if this will help but this page records that Johan's sister Olivia Beata  - nr 13 and 14 and daughter as being in USA in 1880 and being married to a Eckerard Isacksson from Varberg being married 21 Aug 1881 and died 8 Jun 1882....... information about a child being born in Rochester, New York.

It is very difficult to decipher all the text. I hope I got the gist of it all. You may want to check this info on FamilySearch if searchable.

Hi
I didn't give up.
I have now definately found John and Josephine in Sweden in Morup Parish. Unlucky in that both Johans had the same birth date and went to USA around the same time.

This is John and family as a widow in 1920 Census. It shows he was from Morup Sweden. A lucky break:

They were married in Morup Parish in 1880:

Johan Severin Hagman and family in 1880. His father is Carl August Hagman:
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01p61/ - note to right says America 1880.

Josephine Augusta Salomonsdotter and family in 1880:
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01p62/ - note to right says married to J S Hagman. America 1880.
