Marriage Bond/Allegation Locations - *Completed*
« on: Thursday 12 March 20 20:37 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I wonder if some kind person could point me in the right direction…

I have two couples in my tree who married by licence in London and I’d like to find if there are any surviving bonds/allegations.  I’ve tried to find out what archives or locations I need to contact but I am finding myself still pathetically confused.

Any help with what places I should be contacting would be much appreciated. Thank you!  :)

The marriages are:
Thomas SCOTT = Catherine MULLINS
1802 - St George, Bloomsbury, Camden
and
David ANDERSON = Ann BRYAN
1809 - St James, Piccadilly, Westminster

Most licences for marriages in London/Middlesex at this period were issued by the Archbishop of Canterbury or the Bishop of London. The Diocese of Winchester also issued licences for some London/Surrey parishes.

Allegations/bonds for Archbishop of Canterbury licences are held at Lambeth Palace Library, but they have been indexed online (FindMyPast), in two separate indexes – Vicar-General and Faculty Office. After finding the licence date from the index on FindMyPast, the easiest way to get a sight of the originals is:
(a) from the microfilms at the Society of Genealogists, London (instructions on FindMyPast), or
(b) from FamilySearch (but accessible only at a LDS Family History Center or affiliated library).

Allegations/bonds for licences issued by the Diocese of London and the Diocese of Winchester are generally at London Metropolitan Archives, and may be indexed on Ancestry, with some images (but these are incomplete).

If you post some names, someone may be able to help.

Thank you very much for your reply Bookbox! I'd been reading similar info in various other places but hadn't been able to make sense of it, but your answer was very clear, thank you.

I've now been able to locate the both licence dates on FindMyPast, one in the Vicar General and the other in the Faculty Office.

Many thanks!
