Albert Byrne of Dun Laoghaire - Work house Dublin Union
« on: Monday 02 March 20 22:49 GMT (UK) »
I've been trying to solve a family mystery, one of many of what happened to Albert Byrne Born 1886 in Dun Laoghaire.
He is living with his brother Patrick Byrne in 1911
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Dublin/Kingstown_No__2/Sarsfield_Street/96602/

After the death of his brother in 1918 we had lost track of what happened to Albert until I came across a record when an Albert passed away on 20th May 1928 when he is noted as 41 years old.
Given the fairly limited amount of Albert Byrnes in the 1911 Census im reasonably sure its the correct Albert.
My questions are If someone died in the Dublin Union workhouse with no relatives would you have any idea where they would be buried. Also are there are workhouse records available from 1928 or would be have to wait until 2029 before these are available. Any help appreciated.

Have you a Link to death being referred to?

So he did have relatives.

Workhouses were Hospitals in later years.

Sorry , dont understand the so he did have relatives comment. He did have a brother alive who was likely living in Scotland at the time as well as nephews and nieces in Scotland and Dun Laoghaire.

If someone died in the workhouse and no-one claimed the body they would likely be buried in a common grave, often in the workhouse grounds.  (There is a burial ground shown in an 1849 map of this workhouse). But not everyone was buried there. If Albert had any relatives nearby they may have buried him in a family plot.

Here’s a link to information on the workhouse (originally the South Dublin workhouse). Their records are reportedly on findmypast.ie  Can’t say whether they include those within the past 100 years. Possibly not. If they still exist, you may be able to make a Freedom of Information request to view them (to the National Archives in Dublin). If approved you’d get a redacted copy.

As Hallmark has mentioned, most workhouses had hospitals attached and in later years of the system many people admitted themselves there to get medical treatment, rather than because they were totally destitute. (There seems to have been some flexibility around the admission rules). The admission records usually show whether an inmate went straight to the infirmary, or whether they were already in the workhouse.

After the workhouse system was closed down, many of the hospital wings continued as conventional hospitals, and that seems to have happened in this case.

Thank you Elwyn. I have found nearly all the close family members and their graves. They are all buried in Deans Grange Cemetery where there is no record of any Albert Byrnes being buried. One brother died in WW1 in Belgium another in Scotland. Im currently trying to trace the sister Anne to see if she married but with a name like Anne Byrne it will be a needle in a haystack.

Just looking at that death record for Albert Byrne. It is the Dublin Union Workhouse which I think was in James Street Dublin and they note his address as late of 1 Faithful Place. I don't think that James Street Workhouse would have used Deansgrange Cemetery as a burial place. Maybe he was estranged from the remaining family.

Thank you. Any idea where the closest cemetery would be as a starting point. Having a look at the map would it be Bullys Acre.
