Patrick Kelly 28th Regiment of Foot, India 1844
« on: Sunday 01 March 20 19:45 GMT (UK) »
Hello. I am researching Patrick Kelly b. 1821 Dublin. He joined the British Army 28th Regiment of Foot in Liverpool in 1841. He was sent to New South Wales, Australia and in 1842 the Regiment was sent to India. Does anyone know where I can find on line information on his time in India.

I can't help with his time in India, but there are reports of a Patrick KELLY, 28th Regiment of India, slightly injured in 1854 in the Crimea, in a list: "Nominal Return of Non Commissioned Officers and Privates Wounded from the 27th November to 5th December 1854, both days inclusive". I assume the number next to the name in this report is his service number - it's a bit hard to read "1509"?

This report in The Morning Post, Saturday,  Dec. 30, 1854

Again, doesn't help much but there is also this mention of the 28th in India in 1843 "The following orders are confirmed: ..."

That's a great resource Mckha.  :)

Another possible source of info may be in this collection in the NSW State Library which includes a letter with reference to "reminiscences of life of Captain George Thomas Potter, 28th Regiment of Foot, 1810-1849 "
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01p4k/
The State Library has a good Ask a Librarian service which may help you discover if there is any relevant info in the letter:

Hi. Thanks Maddy 52. The slight injury would fit his lost finger information. The England Census for 1851 has the 28th Regiment in barracks at Salford, Manchester. Listed are 3 Patrick Kellys, but no regimental numbers. I also found a medal list 1854 - 1855 for Inkerman and Alma battles with a Patrick Kelly number 1539. I have his sign up records and he has the number 393, so I am not sure they line up. Can you send me a links to the Morning Post  and Friend of India articles.

Hi McKHA489. Thanks for your information. That will keep me busy. Looks like they had a hard time with the climate.

Can you send me a links to the Morning Post  and Friend of India articles.

I access the newspapers through British Library Newspapers, which I can view online free with my Australian National Library card. Not sure where you are, but I'm sure a similar system is set up in many places. Maybe contact your local library as a start? If I post a link it probably won't work as you need to register/have an access card. Alternatively there are pay sites (Ancestry/findmypast/britishnewspaperarchive etc) where you can also access old newspapers.  :)
