Reply #26. I've been trying to untangle Joseph & Mary & offspring too.
The word "spinster" next to Mary Gale's name was for her daughter, Mary Jane Vickers' baptism not for Mary Gale's burial. (Transcription on Lancashire OPC; I haven't seen original.) Burial register states her age, occupation (washerwoman) and address she died at; marital status not recorded.
If Mary Jane Vickers Gale was a baby when she was baptised in 1859 she couldn't have been Joseph's daughter. If she wasn't a baby and she was old enough to have been his daughter, why was Joseph not recorded as father in baptism entry? (There was a similar situation with my ancestors in 1858.)
I had no luck either with finding a birth registration for our Mary Jane Gale. There was a birth registration for Mary A. Gale, mother's maiden name Austin 1859 Bolton. Can rule her out.  Burial at Tonge cemetery July same year of Mary Ann Gale, aged 10 days, daughter of John & Ann; place of death Back King St., Bolton. Marriage 1859, Bolton St. Peter, John Gale & Hannah Austin. Info from Lancs. BMD and Lancashire Online Parish Clerks. I can't find any other likely Mary Gale birth registrations on Lancs. BMD and I looked a few years before 1859. I've been having trouble with GRO so couldn't find births there.

Joseph Gale's occupation at Elizabeth's baptism 1850 was coachman and cab driver at his burial, basically the same type of work.
Doesn't seem to be a birth registration for Elizabeth Gale either. However there is one for Elizabeth COURT 1850 Little Bolton, mother's maiden name Court. Possible confusion between Gort, Cort and Court?  :-\
Marriage of Joseph Gale and Mary Cort/Gort was at Christ Church, Bolton. There were several churches called Christ Church in the Greater Bolton area. Marriage not on LANOPC so no other information about them.
I've tried searching for our Mary's birth registration under surnames Court and Gort but no joy.

There was an older Joseph Gale in Bolton who caught my interest, possibly more than one. One was an ostler or groom. He had a wife Elizabeth and 2 sons, Francis, baptised 1830 and William bap. 1834 at St. Peter, Bolton. 2 sons named Cornelius were born to Joseph Gale 1837 & 1841. They died as infants. Joseph was bookkeeper at 1st and a brewer at 2nd. Francis married 1854.

and is this
Mary Jane Vickers Gale as Mary J Vickers on 1861 census with her father James Vickers
living 2 Naisby Court Little Bolton

James Vickers   Head 42 Bolton twiner & setter
Jane Vickers   wife 32 Preston
Jonathan Vickers son 16 Bolton
Mary J Vickers   dau 2 Bolton
Piece:   2823 Folio:   73 Page Number:   35

Are any of these likely birth registrations for Mary J. Vickers? In case she was legitimate daughter of James Vickers.
1857 mother's maiden name MORRIS,        Westhoughton sub-district
1858 mmn.                          ENTWISTLE,    Turton sub-district
1859 (Mary A.) mmn.           ISHERWOOD,   Little Bolton
1860 (Mary Ann) mmn.        BOARDMAN,     Little Hulton
(Lancashire BMD)

I couldn't see a birth registration for Jonathan but there were plenty of babies named John Vickers.

I think James Sutcliffe VICKERS is the son of James VICKERS (weaver) and Ann SUTCLIFF married 3 Nov 1805 at St Peter, Bolton. (from Lancs opc)

They had a number of children including James (baptised 1819). The other boys who could possibly be the father of Mary Jane GALE are Walter (bap 1835), Edwin (bap 1827), Nicholas (bap 1824), Thomas (bap 1814), John (bap 1808) and Richard (bap 1807).

Edwin might be out of the frame if Mary Jane was born in 1859. Edwin Vickers aged 29 buried Tonge Cemetery March 1857, same year as Joseph Gale. Died at Bradshaw Street. Edwin Vickers marriage 1850; a witness was Walter (transcribed as Walton on LANOPC) Vickers. There are a lot of Vickers burials in Tonge Cemetery.

Joseph dies aged 29 at Back Bark St, and buried 12 July 1857. Then, as mentioned previously a Mary GALE dies aged 34 at Naisby Court, Bark St and buried 14 Jan 1860.

Bark St. exists according to 2014 edition of Bolton & district A-Z. It's a short street near Queen's Park and between Marsden Road and Chorley St. It's near the boundary between Great Bolton and Little Bolton townships. That explains why one burial has the location as Great Bolton and the other as Little Bolton. A narrow piece of Little Bolton curves around west of Great Bolton and a rectangle of Great Bolton protrudes into it. Tonge Cemetery is 2 +half miles east on the other side of town.
Naisby Court may have been named in memory of the Parliamentarian army's victory at the Battle of Naseby 1645. Bolton was loyal to Parliament in the Civil War and was besieged.

However there is one for Elizabeth COURT 1850 Little Bolton, mother's maiden name Court.

Yes, I assumed this was Elizabeth's birth registration, born just before the marriage I guess.

Found this snippet, though it doesn't help with Mary Jane's parentage.

Manchester Courier and Lancashire General Advertiser, Wednesday,  Feb. 9, 1848

"CAUTION TO CABMEN, - At the Borough Court, on Monday, Joseph Gale, a cab driver in the service of Messrs.  Higson and Greenwood, was summoned by Mr. Harry Bridson, for not delivering a cornopean which had been left in his cab, to the police, within an hour according to the bye-laws. It appeared to have been left under a seat, and that the defendant was not aware of it. It was found by another man, who took it into the office, where it remained until enquired for. The defendant was liable to a penalty of 40s., but as there did not appear to be any intention of dishonesty, he was discharged on paying the summons."

(A cornopean is a type of cornet  ;) )

Modified to add:
Just for interest - the partnership of Higson and Greenwood, postmasters of Bolton-le-Moors, was dissolved in July 1849.

Birth registrations of 2 elder sons of James & Martha Vickers.
1839 VICKERS Thomas, mother's maiden name GUELDART  Eastern Bolton
1841 VICARS John, mmn. GELDERT  Little Bolton

Death registrations:
1840 Two registrations for Thomas Vickers age 0 in Eastern Bolton
John may have died 1843 aged 0.
James may have died 1855 aged 5.
1856 VICKERS Martha age 38 Little Bolton

If those death registrations for John and James were their children perhaps Jonathan was the only child who survived.  :(
There don't seem to have been any more children born after James 1851.
