Geneanet DNA
« on: Friday 21 February 20 08:41 GMT (UK) »
I have had my tree on Geneanet for many years, and it has brought me a lot of contacts.

Last night I had an email announcing their DNA venture.

This morning I uploaded my ancestry DNA test, and 2 hours later I got my first match.

I was astonished

David

If you upload your DNA almost anywhere (DNA related) you will get hits the question is whether the hit is of any use to you.

Would you like to tell us a little about your hit, i.e. was it useful, was it correct, how did you verify it etc?

Oh, and good luck with your new venture.
James Stott c1775-1850. James was born in Yorkshire but where? He was a stonemason and married Elizabeth Archer (nee Nicholson) in 1794 at Ripon. They lived thereafter in Masham. If anyone has any suggestions or leads as to his birthplace I would be interested to know. I have searched for it for years without success. Thank you.

As both of us were on FT_DNA it was correct. The information given is minimal ie. .21% but future matches may be more signifiant. It is better than Living_DNA where I am still waiting for a match.

In time I hope the information may be better.

I have no regrets

David

After reading post this morning I uploaded my data as I know some of my German/Russian relatives have family trees there. Was very disappointed in the results (and not just because I didn't find connections I was hoping to see).

I got ONE match and it says we share 0.29% DNA (no mention of how many centimorgans that would be) and it's a "Low accuracy DNA relationship."

Most possible relationships:
distant cousin (common ancestor between 4th and 9th generation)
distant cousin (common ancestor between 4th and 9th generation)
Other possible relationships:
distant cousin (common ancestor between 3rd and 8th generation)
distant cousin (common ancestor between 3rd and 8th generation)
Less possible relationships:
distant cousin (common ancestor between 4th and 10th generation)
distant cousin (common ancestor between 4th and 10th generation)

From Gedmatch and a few other sites I know we share 60 cm and DNA Painter calculates these as possible relationships-

Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

ISOGG has a chart with percentages and centimorgans for different relationships

https://isogg.org/wiki/Autosomal_DNA_statistics

0.29% would lie between 13 cMs - 26 cMs

60 cMs would be considerably higher percentage, so the accuracy has to be questioned.

I uploaded mine out of interest - no matches as yet, which is to be expected if they have only just started out.

However, if they only accept uploads, I think useful matches aren't going to be that many, people will upload to myheritagedna, FTDNA and even Living DNA as well/instead.
So far Gedmatch is the only popular upload only site, and that is having problems as we know.

It might depend upon how good their tools are, sounds like they haven't got any at present.

Like David (Davnich) I still have no matches at Living DNA.

Just uploaded 3 kits, one English, one Canadian and one Italian. I am going to wait and see what sort of matches they turn up before checking with the owners of the other kits that I manage whether they want to be added to Geneanet.

So far my 3 uploads have correctly reported a match between two of them, and have given two matches that are not from my uploads. It will be interesting to see how those match lists continue to develop.
