Information on Charles Collier bap. 1774 Manchester Cathedral
« on: Friday 14 February 20 05:32 GMT (UK) »
I'm looking for information on Charles Collier bap. 16 October 1774 in Manchester Cathedral, parents Abraham and Mary Collier. A trade directory in 1800 lists Charles living with his parents in Red Bank, occupation hatter. However, I have no other information on Charles - marriage, children, or later life.

The 1841 census lists a Chas Collier living in Stockport, but I'm stumped as to whether this is Charles bap. 1774.

Any help would be most welcome.

Thank you

James

Another baptism with father Abraham COLLIER (hatter) is:
26 Apr 1772     Sarah      St Peter, Blackley    Abode: Manchester

There is also a burial:
24 Jan 1796       St Mary the Virgin, Prestwich
James Collier - Son of Abraham Collier    Abode: Red Bank

The 1841 census for Charles in Stockport includes a wife Mary and son Robert 25 - all not born in the county.   Have you managed to find where Robert was born?

My grandfather was a hatter in Stockport and the town was well known for hat manufacture so a reasonable move if it was the right family https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hat_Works

Kay99,

Thank you for the information. I've seen Charles and Mary in the 1841 census, but have yet to find a record of Robert's birth. I'll keep looking.

Cheers

James

Great information, thanks. It all helps build a stronger picture of the ancestor I'm chasing.

Cheers

There is also this advertisement in 1787 that may be your Abraham

"TAKEN UP
A small GREYHOUND female  dog
Whoever will own the same by its Marks, and pay the necessary Expenses, may have it again, by applying to Abraham Collier, at the Wheat Sheaf, Red Bank, Manchester. If not owned in a Fortnight's Time, it will be sold to defray the same."
Mancester Mercury, Tuesday,  June 5, 1787

Too funny - Small greyhound "female dog" is not what the article says, but RootsChat won't let me print what the original says "bi..ch"  ;D ;D
