Can anyone suggest the ages of the couple and a approx era ?

What sort of uniform is the man wearing ?any help is appreciated

Edwardian & realistically could be up to just prior to WW1.
The soldier is wearing a 1908 pattern uniform & is a Lance Corporal.
The flaming grenade collar dogs were worn by a number of Regiments unfortunately.
I can't make out the insignia above his stripe.
He may not be a full timer & could be a Territorial & the insignia is an overseas service patch but that's just musing on my part.
They look 35-40.

I estimate they are a bit younger - around 30 ish.

Uniform looks to me to be 1900s police one - especially with the whistle chain. He seems to have numbers "49" on his collar, and the single stripe would likely indicate Acting Sergeant - with probably a First aid badge above the stripe. Sorry but I cannot see clearly enough what Force identifier he has on his epaulettes.

I think you're right. Taking a closer look it does look more like 49 than a flaming grenade.

Looks like Police to me.  The small chain is the same as that used by Police Officers and Prison Officers to secure a whistle.  Prison Officers' numbers are on the epaulettes rather than the collar and usually start with 2 letters to indicate which prison.  I really think Police is most likely but I can't explain the single stripe on his arm.

Yes I agree Police Constable.  The single stripe probably does indicate acting sergeant it would be an elasticated band maybe.   PC 49!  sounds familiar, wasn't the actor Brian Reece?
