Ordering a Marriage Certificate without GRO reference
« on: Sunday 02 February 20 08:00 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

I am trying and failing to get my head around ordering a marriage certificate from the GRO without the index reference.

As I don’t know the date of the marriage yet it is one of the ‘required fields’ when ordering from the GRO, can I simply put (say) ‘01/01/2007’ and they’ll search a year either side of that date for me?

Thanks in advance
Matt

Have you checked for the marriage on FreeBMD?

That will get the the reference you need.

If the marriage is as recent as 2007, you HAVE to provide a reference - it's to avoid fraudsters!

Quoting from the GRO:
You will be prompted to supply further details for more recent births and deaths (within the last 50 years) when you complete the online application form.

If you are unable to complete the mandatory fields, then you will not be able to apply online and you will need to follow our telephone ordering process. Please contact us on +44(0) 300 123 1837 for further information.

Thanks for your reply.

The marriage happened in 2006, and the indexes online only stretch to 2005 unfortunately.

You can use the GRO website to order a marriage certificate, without knowing the exact date -

https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/app_select.asp
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

You have two choices, the exact date or the reference number.

There is either a telephone number or address for contact to GRO - given on the link I provided.  If all else fails, why not give it a go  :)

There is a phone number on the Contact Us section of the GRO site. A call to them may confirm IF its possible to purchase a cert this recent without either a date or a reference and, if so, how to go about it.
