Hello again.
This week I enquired at the public reading room counter, about the original B. D. & M., records that were registered with the local Governmental agency, throughout the country, 100 + years ago. (Court Houses and Post Offices etc.)
I was informed that; yes the Archives NZ branches do hold original registers (& some local area compilations) from which the Department of Internal Affairs compiled their national record at Wellington; but since the introduction of new legislation, to greater protect from identity theft, even “historic” (100+ years) records are deemed “restricted” and the public are denied access.
Hence the RESTRICTION DOES NOT EXPIRE notation.
The archivist stated that occasionally, to her knowledge, the Registrar-General has requested Auckland branch ARCHIVES staff to look up, and produce a reproduction of an entry for Internal Affairs, but they have never processed a permission granted by the Registrar-General, for a member of the public, to be able to gain access to witness an entry therein.
I am therefore very lucky that I chose to pay to witness such entries therein, back in the 1980’s when I looked up records at Auckland B. D. & M., Ngaruawahia Post Office, Hamilton Court, and Cambridge Post Office.
Any redress therefore appears to be with/through dialogue with the Registrar General, B D & M, Department of Internal Affairs, Wellington.
Alan.
