Thanks minniehaha. I would still like to know if it is possible to see the original registers, wherever they may be. If I draw a blank with that, I will go armed with what I have.

Hello SpudKiwi.

As I have yet to master adding a link to an Archives NZ search result page info, that I would like to draw your attention to, I’ve taken some page screen images, to which I have added some (Red ink) notations.  I believe you are looking for 1918 registrations, so over 100 years ago, when a single entry, but not in a book register claiming to have year 1920 registrations.

(Past postings have seen my links take you only to the search box)

Two postings of images as they exceed the uploading limit.

And two more.

I have been present at the Auckland Archives when a registered user has visited and handed over an authority issued by the Court, allowing the staff to bring up the record for the permit holder to view the held record. So it is possible to arrange, IF a registered reader (relatively simple process) and it is deemed you have a suitable case for seeking a viewing.

Hello again.

Have you tried the name (and varients) of interest in an ARCHWAY search?

The Archives listings have a file R20957672 subject matter Dannevirke Hospital Childrens Ward 1917 - 1921 held at Wellington.

This file may be an administrative file, establishing of etc, or a file containing patients clinical notes & admission / discharge info; correspondence etc.

From previous experience people named in files held, may or may not, be fully indexed.

File notated that there MAY be some restrictions.

I ask as the NZBDM has the wrong details on my grandmothers birth certificate. Date, place, and mother are right (father not recorded),
I'm not sure of the relevance of this, but the printout NZBDM gave me was a typed one and not the handwritten one you normally get.

Was your mum adopted out by her birth mother?

From BDM's website under "Glossary"
Printout      A scanned image of the original record, however if a record has been updated or corrected it will be typed, as a correction cannot be made to a scanned image.
All records 1998 onwards will be typed as there is no scanned image.
Non-emailed printouts are produced on plain white paper.

This may explain the printed version

Cheers Janette

My mum was not adopted. My grandmother was illegitimate though, but not adopted out. In the father column there will be no entry or "not recorded" or some such thing.

I am encouraged that it appears the Dannevirke Birth Register is held in Auckland, thats quite handy to where I live.

A bit discouraged at the amount of hoops it looks I may have to jump through.

Would the first hoop be presenting my case in writing to The Registrar-General, Births Deaths and Marriages, Department of Internal Affairs, PO Box 10-526, Wellington 6143?

Hello again.

Personally I would seek clarification first, from the staff manning the Auckland branch reading room.
