Ancestry Website want even more money to see an Obituary
« on: Thursday 23 January 20 19:13 GMT (UK) »
I have the premium membership on Ancestry but that doesn't entitle me to see obituaries even though a "hint" for one pops up for my aunt.

Ancestry want another £119 to provide access, no thank you.

Can anyone suggest where I might be able to find a local source of the obituary?

My aunt Gwendoline Gillard (nee Chester) died October 1957 in Oldbury West Midlands.

Thank you

Most of Ancestry's obituaries come from newspapers, so try there. You can search for free on the British Newspaper Archive and then they allow 3 free look ups before you have to pay to see the image.

Failing that, the Local Studies Library/Archives for the town will probably have newspapers. If you can't go there, you can put a request on the county lookup forum. Give them the exact DoD if you can.  If that still fails the library staff may be able to send you a copy. They may charge for it, but it shouldn't be anywhere near £118.
Researching Penge, Anerley, (including the Crystal Palace) and neighbouring parts of Beckenham, currently in London (Bromley), formerly Surrey and/or Kent.

Sorry - Can't help with the obit but I believe that Gwendoline Margaret Gillard died 03 Oct 1957 in childbirth at Hallan Hospital West Bromwich. She was only 26. Her child only lived 9 hours and both mother and child were buried together 10 Oct '57 Oldbury Cemetery Sandwell (West Midlands) (Grave #3136)

A William Gillard (husband? - marr 1952) was buried with the above 2 following his death 20 April 1974 at Prestwood Chest Hospital. He was 58 (buried 26 April 1974)

Possible address for the family: 53 Wallace Road Oldbury Warley

Hope this helps
