Knowledge of "The Chuckie" a building in Tollcross Glasgow
« on: Wednesday 22 January 20 14:07 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I am wondering if you can help me,?  I am trying to trace any information regarding a building in Tollcross where my parents and my grandmother lived in the 1920’s and early thirties. My grandmother was called Gunn and my parents Crossan
It was known as The Chuckie and occupied 3 sides of a square bounded by Eversley St/ Tollcross Rd/ Battleburn St /the fourth side was open.   It was knocked down between 1980 and 1996 and replaced by a youth centre and social housing.
If you have any information, photographs, or know of a possible source of information I would be grateful to hear of it

Yours sincerely,
John

The Chuckie on the Internet

http://discuss.glasgowguide.co.uk/lofiversion/index.php/t7984.html

Hi I just tried that link but it would not open for me ?

Regards

Sarah

Unfortunately the GlasgowGuide site appears to have gone down, hopefully only in the short term. The link did go to discussions by former residents of Tollcross and of various buildings in the area. You may, unfortunately,  just have to wait to see if it comes back.

It is frustrating because the site may have provided some useful information, John

The Glasgow Guide site is back up and running. The link now takes you to the relevent discussion board (sadly not much about the Chuckie itself)

Hi John,

I think the chuckie disappeared in the early sixties. Battleburn street disappeared from the maps at the same time.

In 1969 My grandparents and mum were cleared from their old “slum” housing in the Rottenrow in Glasgow and relocated to the newly built flats on tollcross road where the chuckie would have stood. My grandparents still lived there until their deaths about five years ago. similar flats were built down the eversley street side. The back court was massive so I presume that was the old back court of the chuckie, made even larger due the removal of battleburn street as the grass went right up to the border wall with the old school, which has now been turned into a housing centre itself.

Kind regards,

Rory
