That looks good Mckha.  Gives a birth year of 1909.  If this is the same lady she didn't remarry then.  If she had it would have been more difficult to find her.

Would Diana be able to obtain a death certificate?  I'm not familiar with the BMD system in Australia.

Neither am I, but there is obviously a 30 year rule on the NSW bdm site, so perhaps not.

The 2009 death will be too young.  The birth year is given as 1942.

TODD, MARIA       1942
GRO Reference:  DOR  Q1/2009 in Islington  (2381C)  Reg 1C003  Entry Number 501595336

Thank you, Girl Guide!

Hhmmm, interesting.......

I have found a travel record for a Mrs. M. L. Todd born 17th April 1909, single, occupation cook.

She left on the 23rd October 1956, destination Sydney, Australia

A look at the image reveals that widowed or divorced persons are to be marked as single.

Her address at the time of leaving was Basement Flat, 9A Rosehill Terrace, Brighton, Sussex.  She intended to reside  permanently in Australia.

The ship was called the S.S. Orion.

Thank you so much, am convinced this is my Maria, coupled with the fact that she had been living in Brighton, not all that far from Worthing where she had been in 1939.
I am now on the hunt for her brothers, who both had common names (Robert and Thomas), good well be that one or both ended up in Australia.
