WW1 army papers - abbreviations
« on: Wednesday 15 January 20 08:57 GMT (UK) »
Hello, and wondering if someone could help please. I cannot find a definition of "RH" which appears on my Grandfathers army papers. Please see the attached snippet which also shows "RVC" and "RDC" on the lines below it. I am assuming "RDC" stands for Royal Defence Corps? It is particularly "RH" I'd like to confirm but if anyone has any ideas on either of the three I would be very grateful. Many thanks for your help

Unless the clerks were getting the initials badly wrong, what the first two are not are "Royal Hussars" and "Royal Veterinary Corps".  RDC was formed in April 1916 so if the associated date cross checks then the last may well be that.

If the record is on line, would you like to post his name and number to help the search for clues.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,

MaxD,
Thanks for taking the trouble to look at this! He is James L Barrie (Barry on some docs!). He started with 1/6th Black Watch, no.1499. After injuries etc, he was posted to 799 Coy Labour Corps, no.567044. Really appreciate your help. Best regards

Should have got this first time round!  RH is Royal Highlanders, the proper name of the Black Watch is Royal Highlanders (Black Watch).

Looking at his record, the RVC is an incorrect rendition of RDC - it is clear from his service and casualty form that the only 12th Company is RDC.

He was in 39 Company Labour Corps before 799 Company.

Thank you MaxD.
This is very helpful indeed. I am just going through trying to tabulate all the entries in his service papers and work out how he was invalided home, etc. Also trying to make a timeline and feeding in details from the 1/6th Black Watch Diary. So this info' is very useful.
Again, thanks for your all your help. Best regards

You are most welcome.  Happy to cross check the time line if you wish, here or by PM.
