Schooner DAIRYMAID 1915
« on: Friday 03 January 20 07:30 GMT (UK) »
Hi list,

on February 11 1915 the schooner Dairymaid sailed from Teignmouth bound for Runcorn with a cargo of clay. It never reached it's destination and on 22 April was listed as 'missing'.

My grandfather crewed on this ship in 1912 and 1913 and is listed on Crewlist. There are no crew lists for 1914 available and there will be no list for 1915 as they were submitted every six months to the local registry (Lancashire in this case)

A family story is that he was on a vessel that sunk and was not found for some time and ended up in Queenstown, Ireland. His fiancée/girlfriend took his identification papers over - he was Norwegian and had lived in Fowey since 1912.

I am not sure that the ship in question is the one he was on and searches of newspapers for Cornwall, Devon and Ireland have not shed any further light on the fate of the ship and it's crew. Being WW1 there were more important events in the press.

I would appreciate local knowledge or possible sources of further research.

regards

DAIRYMAID Official number 56698. Her 1914 Crew Agreements are available. at a cost, from here.
https://www.mun.ca/mha/holdings/viewcombinedcrews.php?Official_No=56698

Her 1915 Crew agreement can be obtained from-
https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C2480427

For some reason, the 1915 Crew Agreement of DAIRYMAID is not included in the on line database from the National Maritime Museum.

https://1915crewlists.rmg.co.uk/document?vessel_search%5BvesselName%5D=dairymaid&vessel_search%5BofficialNumber%5D=56698&vessel_search%5Bsubmit%5D=

It may also pay you to get hold of these documents. The first one is self explanatory.  Without knowing you grandfathers name, I do not know if the information is relevent. The second is the vessels registration documents, giving details of the ships ownership throughout her seagoing career. However all kinds of odd paperwork can be included which may give you clues to the cause of her demise.

So. It would appear that Karl Holm was not on board DAIRYMAID when she made her fatal voyage.
Where to next?
No central personal records of Merchant Seamen were kept between 1857 and 1913. The records of Merchant Seamen for the period of the first World War have been destroyed. The is no record of Karl/Carl Holm in the 1915 on line crew agreements.
Have you checked Find my Past to see if he has any Merchant Seamans service after 1918? If he has you may be able to trace him back via Crew Agreements.

Found a couple of articles from the newspapers on FindMyPast for a Karl Holm.

Seamen from the Jupiter – Drunk and Disorderly near the Ferry.
Two Scandinavian firemen of the steamer Jupiter, Karl Holm and John Tiller, were
each fined 9s and 2s 6d witness’ fees each at North Shields Police Court today for
having been drunk and disorderly in Duke Street, North Shields, at 10:40 last night.
P.C. Simpson said they were shouting, singing and molesting people coming from
the ferry.  He repeatedly tried to get them to go to their ship, but they would not.
Defendants, who said through an interpreter that they could not understand what
the officer said.  [Shields Daily News 29 June 1932]
......................................

A young German named Karl Holm,
an able seaman, was brought before the Poole magistrates
on Wednesday charged With having failed to report himself
within The specified time as laid down under the Aliens’ Act.
After consultation the magistrates Decided that temporarily
he should remain in The care of Supt. Bowles, who would
communicate With the Chief Constable with the idea of the
Secretary of State being asked whether he would allow the
young man to go to Fowey (Cornwall).
