BRIGLEY family [but erroneously BIGLEY? in England census]
« on: Saturday 20 August 05 14:26 BST (UK) »
I have been searching in the county board for the BIGLEY family but now understand that it might be BRIGLEY instead.

All these ancestors were born in IRELAND according to the censuses of 1871, 1881, 1891:

Simon BRIGLEY 68 Upholsterer living in UTTOXETER 1891 birthplace IRELAND  estimated year of birth 1823

Charlotte BRIGLEY his wife was 56 in 1881 [estimated year of birth 1825] when they were living in High Street Uttoxeter Staffordshire, with their 27 year old son  ARTHUR G [possibly GORE] BRIGLEY [estimated year of birth 1854]who was a clerk

Emma E P BRIGLEY was the daughter of Simon and Charlotte who was 31 in 1891 also living with her father in UTTOXETER.  Her estimated year of birth is 1860

ARTHUR BRIGLEY married ARABELLA IMISON and they had a son CECIL GORE BRIGLEY who was 6 in the 1901 census.

I do hope that this will help someone to help me to locate these people's birthplaces and any other family members.

THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH

IMISON

The mystery is that elsewhere the same lady is named variously as EMILY PAULINE BRIGLEY [note the absence of Emma]

Hi,

Have you searched fr other families with the same surname in the same area as they often emigrated together.

Also check the Griffith Valuation for this surname.

Dear Kate

Thank you very much for this useful information.  I really had no idea about this side of the family until a few weeks ago, when I realised that there were indeed Irish root in the close family circle.

Is GRIFFITH VALUATION online at all please?

Thank you very much again - I shall look for FAMILIES emigrating together in future.

Best wishes

Dear Kate

Thank you so much for that extremely useful information - the plot now thickens as there were no matches for BRIGLEY but a handful or so for BIGLEY.

The English censuses vary too, and this makes searching for people very difficult, and matching who was related to whom!

Yet I had looked at a different search engine on another Irish site and not found 'Bigley', only Brigley.

I suspect that it was more a question of local variation, and maybe a question of times being a period when so many people emigrated from Ireland, maybe there were none left.  OR maybe their name changed from ERSE {and I have no idea how Bigley or indeed Brigley would have been spelled in Erse} when they went to an English language zone such as Britain or America.

Just thinking out loud!

Thank you again - it has set me wondering who is right?

Best wishes

aaahhhh, about time I figured out where to register for this site. Good day Imison. I myself am a Brigley from North Bay, Ontario, Canada. I have created my own website for our family history and you quite welcome to join it. I have posted an archive back to when the Brigley's first came to Canada and their monement down into the states. I'm awaiting an archive that pre-dates mine back to when the Brigley's originated in Ireland.
I hope this is a help in your search.

Since it is a secure site, your welcome to use your real name.

I see your complication with the variants between "Brigley" & "Bigley" It would be easy to have this happen since most people in the early 1800's did not know how to write, and when they moved they pronounced their name to the local preist, who would then record it for them.

Good day Imison, I have since deleted the old site (however backed up my work) and opened a much more popular facebook group called Global Brigley Family Reunion. There are now Brigley's from across Canada and the US working together on a family tree. We are close to making the connection to Ireland, but not quite there....yet.

Thank you for telling me of this new tree link.

Good luck with it.

I do hope you find all the connections with Ireland as well as my links! lol!
