Hi there and happy new years eve!

I have been researching my husbands family tree. He was told by his mother and maternal grandmother that they descend from native ancestry. Going back many generations I have found the family to be of french back ground and have been living in and around the ontario/quebec border and st lawrence river area for many many generations. I have yet to find any evidence of a first nations/metis connection.

looking for suggestions on how to find this connection. A person on ancestry has Pierre Francois Villeneuve (1816-1871) and his wife Sophie Villeneuve (1828-1885) listed in their tree with a photo of a metis flag but no other explanation. I have reached out to them with no response yet.

Pierre Villeneuve born in rigaud quebec parents are Vincent Xavier Villeneuve of Vaudreuil Quebec and Maire Ann Quesnel of oka, Quebec

Sophie Villeneuve born in Vaudreuil quebec

I noted the 1861 Canadian Census has a place to note whether you are of "Indian, colored or muslim" decent and thus far none of his family have checked that box

hoping to find suggestions on how to find first nation connections to this family and other relations of husband.

thank you for your time, Torrie

The 1850 Rigaud marriage for Sophie Villeneuve d/o Jeremie Villeneuve and Apollina Bedard to Pierre Villeneuve.  Have you actually deciphered Peter's parents from this record.  Can't figure it out myself but it doesn't look like Vincent Xavier.  The 1852 census for Alfred Prescott has Peter and Sophia along with a widowed Jeremiah Villeneuve so it does appear that Sophia's parents are correct.  Don't know who the older Villeneuve children would be.  Rose 9, Leon 4, as they would be born before the marriage.
Can see them in the 1861 census still in Alfred.  He goes by Peter.
I hope you have sourced records yourself and not just accepted the validity of others trees and those little green leaves as they can lead you in wrong directions.
Have you tried for an obituary for either Peter or Sophia as they seemed to stay in the Alfred area

Assuming I have found the same tree.....

I have been looking at the records and can't really see any obvious First Nations connection. The tree I have looked doesn't even have parents for Euphrosine although has a birth date in Oka. From memory, the records from her given birth year are missing from the online parish records so I was wondering where the date may have come from.

Also wondering if you have had a response from the tree holder you mentioned?

Although some more recent lines of Villeneuve may have wed someone with "mixed-blood" it  looks as though it was not yours.  I can see few early surname Villeneuve (Mathurin VILLENEUVE) and a totally different line using Amiot/Amyot "dit" Villeneuve in Quebec. The only "mixed blood" connection I've seen so far goes back to *Daniel Joseph, below & 2 his two marriages
Philippe Amiot and Anne Convent  m. 1626 France
son: Mathieu Amyot Villeneuve married Nov 22, 1650 - sp: Marie Miville, Quebec, Qc
( dau of Pierre Miville and Charlotte Magis/Maugis m. France)
             * son: Daniel Joseph Amiot b.  4 October 1665 Ville de Quebec
                  1. Marie Kapiouapnokoue 17 years & Daniel-Joseph Amiot Villeneuve 43 years
Sept 2 1709 Montréal, Notre-Dame, Quebec, Canada ( she may have died 1714)
                  2.  It appears there may have been a second marriage to a Domithilde Oukabe
Nepveuouikabe LaFourche, daughter of KeWaNoQuat, sister of NisSoWaQuet an
Indian woman ( their father said to be"Chief of the Little Traverse Band of Ottawa")

Only children I found were these, mentioned in the Annals of Fort Mackinac 9Mich) after Daniel dies & she remarries
      - 27 Sept 1712 Daniel, son of Daniel Villeneuve and of Domitille, now madame L'anglade.
      - 8 Mar 1716 Anne, dau of Daniel Villeneuve and of M de L'anglade (now wife of Sieur
               Guiori/Guillory,Guyori
      - 10 Jan  1720 Marie Louise Therese , now wife of Sieur Gautier.
      - 13 May 1722 Jean Baptiste Villeneuve, son of madame L'anglade.
      - 5 Feb 1724 Agathe , daughter of madame L'anglade, now wife of Bolshile /Boisguilbert
      -  ? (Nanette Villeneuve, Metis, died 1757, daughter of Daniel Joseph Amoit de Villeneuve )
      - 13 Sept. 1731 Augustine de L'anglade & Domitille Villeneuve Widow of ____ Villeneuv

The parents were born in Canada, but are the offspring Canadian or U.S. mixed blood/metis?

Found this online which says father Daniel was also "mixed blood" (he wasn't) ...1722 May 13 Mackinac, New France (Michigan), baptism (IV)-Jean Baptiste Villeneuve, Metis, died 1759 son (III)-Daniel Joseph Amoit de Villeneuve, Metis, (1665-1726) and Domitilde Oukabe (LaFourche) (Madame L'Anglade) 2nd husband Augustin Langlade;

There might be lot of people who believe just having the surname makes them metis but lineage must be proven. Adding: Apparently one must have more than one ancestor of mixed blood as well, and there appear to be a lot of opinions as to where that physical line is drawn.  ::) :P

Metis are from Red River area of the now the province of Manitoba late 18thC-19thC
they didn't begin to move east until the mid to late 1800's.

This is who seek providing your information is correct.

It appears that one tree-owner has first daughter as Anne Marie Quesnel and another adds the third name as Euphrasine. I can see why if they believe the death date found age 33, but those aren't always correct either. Another tree puts her in as the 3rd child. I found earlier 18th century Oka Baptisms but couldn't see these later ones. This site uses the name Quesnel with "Dit Fonblanche" http://www.rootschat.com/links/01p4o/

As I noted earlier, I couldn't find any obvious First Nation connection. It appears Euphrosine was born in Oka so I wonder if earlier generations assumed she was Native because of her birthplace. That would not necessarily be the case.

I note that you have looked for Native connections in the 1861 census. I'm not sure whether you know you can do the same for the 1851/2 census?

This link is for Peter in 1851/2...

http://data2.collectionscanada.gc.ca/e/e095/e002368283.jpg

There is a second page to the census where the relevant question can be found. Next link...

http://data2.collectionscanada.ca/1851_pdf/e095/e002368284.pdf

The bottom of this next link explains how to find the second page for a record...

https://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/census/1851/Pages/about-census.aspx

The second page is also accessible through the automatedgenealogy website. I find this one easier to use.

I don't know much about ethnicity DNA testing or whether it might be an option for you (personally, privacy would be an issue for me). A birth that happened approx 200 years ago or so may not leave much of a DNA footprint. There is a seperate section about DNA testing here on RootsChat that might be of help in this regard.

Added: about the 1851/2 census...the way they appear to set the pages up groups families together and I suspect that Rose, Leon, and Adeline could be the children of Jeremiah Villeneuve and Hypolite/Hypoline/Appoline Bedard. There is a death for a Rose Villeneuve in 1926 for you to consider. Anyway, food for thought.
