Is it a Velvet soft material? Rather than a firmer cap shape.

Like a Graduation Bonnet?

Worn by graduates of higher degrees such as a Master or Doctorate or worn by the Head of the school or university, other school officials and Professors.

Unlike the mortar board cap which is square in shape, the tam is actually circular in shape and are fluffy to look at when worn and are usually made out of velvet.

I have not actually seen it - it certainly looks like velvet. However I'm 99% sure he did not go to any university and we have been led to believe he was 'capped' for rugby.

Thanks Treetotal. Although it would not have been military the website has some similar ones. However there is a lack of references to Scotland. I have also found some links on it, including one that is a 'cap detective'. Will give that a try.

I have established that the cap is velvet and that it was made by Rowan & Co, 104 Argyle Street, Glasgow. I have tried to contact Scotland Rugby News but was unable to upload a picture. I sent an email to ask them for further information but as yet had no reply. I have contacted the University of Glasgow archives, who have responded very quickly (as usual) giving some further ideas including one - Sports Heritage Scotland to whom I have just sent the details. I have also contacted Glasgow City Archives but as yet I have had no response. My initial email that I sent to Allan Glen rugby club remains unanswered.
I would like to thank you all for your suggestions & help. Will let you know if I am successful.

It might not be a rugby cap at all.  The c probably represents 'club'.  I've seen similar caps from even earlier with RFC for Rangers, but is it possible that this is an athletic club, I wonder?

This is an Edinburgh Accies rugby cap, so it does seem like it might be a similar name - something like Shawlands Academy - just a thought?
