Selling Church grave stone
« on: Thursday 12 December 19 14:35 GMT (UK) »
Hello Folks
I wonder if anyone can help me please, do you live or have easy access to St Mary the Virgin Church, Selling,.
I am trying to determine which of my ancestors is buried there in a particular gave.
As you enter the Lynch Gate of the church, there are 8 graves on the left hand side, the 3rd one along from the road I could not read what was on the headstone, unfortunately when I visited the graves earlier in the year I never thought to see if there was a foot stone resting against the headstone, as there are with the other graves there, they have initials and a date, I am asking if anyone cold be kind enough to visit the churchyard to see if there is a foot stone and if any initials and a date are there and readable, all the 8  graves are of my ancestors, to help identify, the one nearest the road is William Clackett date 1893  next is Sarah Clackett 1877, then the one I couldn’t read, the next is William Clackett 1847, I have all the information written on all the grave stones for all of them except No 3.
I did contact the Church to enquire if they have records of who is buried in the church yard at that time, but they don’t unfortunately, I also phoned Canterbury Archives but they couldn’t help either.
I live in Cornwall so can’t just pop to Kent easily
If you can help it would be most appreciated
Many thanks

Hi

If you look on 'Find a Grave' site you will see photos of the grave stones you refer to.   As the stones were in date order I expected the missing one to be between 1847 & 1877.  This gives Martha Houghting Clackett born 2/7/1789 - died 27/8/1861 (62)?   She was the wife of William 1782-1847 and mother of William 1813-1893.  I think I've got that right.  But check it out.

Good luck
