It's Bryan McGowan who is Pat's father.

On the question of interchangeability, see this thread.

KG

Edited to add: Earlier children also have Bryan as their father.

Bryan and Bernard are interchangeable.

Surnames I would say are not. (haven't read KG's link)

Wouldn't it help to find Patrick's marriage first than birth.

KG - great thank you - looks like Brian and Honor are Pat's Parents

Sinann - Yes It would make sense but I can't Pat's Marriage to Anne Scanlon anywhere (though maybe I'll look again as it could have been in Aughness and missed earlier).  The Marriage is confirmed by the 1901 census

Thanks again,

Hi,
i have also just started looking for my Grandfathers roots, John "darkie" McGowan who looks like he was the son of Anne & Patrick Mcgowan from house 35 Dooyork... From the census 1901, Anne was formally Scanlon.
My Grandfather moved to Norfolk in the UK, not sure when, and had 1 child, my father Bernard Victor Mcgowan.
