Can't make out name.
« on: Monday 25 November 19 22:07 GMT (UK) »
Looking at the death certificate for a Margaret Ross in 1880 in Banffshire, I just can't seem to make out the name of her son in law who signed it.
Any ideas?

Menzies?

Surname looks like selcisstoni  is that a name?  Doesn’t really go with Menzies

That's what I was thinking the surname looked like too. I'll maybe need to do a bit more digging and see if it fits.

You could attack this from a different direction.  If he was her son in law then one supposes that he married Margaret's daughter or one of them if she had more than one daughter.

Look for the marriages of Margaret's daughter(s).

I wonder if the name is Italian, many Italians settled in Scotland as well as other parts of the U.K.
Other R. C posters have made good suggestions re solving the puzzle.

Thanks all, I will try and piece together more parts of their family and see if anything comes up.  :)

I was thinking that the surname might begin with a G rather than an S.

I've dome a quick trawl (using S and G with various asterisks)  on SP but so far haven't found anything that jumps out.

I would also do as mentioned, track the daughter(s) through census' for a possible timeline for marriage(s).

Do you have the names/dates of all children?

Can you also confirm Ross as the married name or maiden name?

The initial of the surname of the Son-in-Law does not look like the 'S' in his title.

It may be, he signed & the Registrar filled in his title?

Is it possible to post a wider image for letter comparison?
